Taxi drivers' allegations lead to checks on taxis in town

TAXI drivers have been checked by police to make sure they are not plying for trade in the incorrect district.

In a joint South Kesteven District Council and Lincolnshire Police operation, officers checked out allegations made by local taxi drivers that taxis from outside the district were plying for trade.

Numerous vehicles were inspected at the beginning of this month.

Council environmental health department licensing officers Pam Lahney and Richard Etherton teamed up with police officers in Stamford.

Pam said: “This is the first time we’ve worked in this way with the police. It was extremely useful. The police stopped the cars for us and we checked the drivers’ details while the police carried out standard vehicle inspections.”

The inspection was carried out because the council had received a number of complaints from Stamford-based taxi drivers.

Not only were some taxi drivers concerned about the potential threat to their business posed by taxis licensed outside South Kesteven, others claimed these vehicles were unsafe.

After the operation in Stamford, Pam reported that of all the vehicles checked, “it was pleasing to note that only minor infringements were found and these are being dealt with accordingly.”

The Soth Kesteven District Council has approximately 100 licensed taxis operating in the Stamford area.

My god Richard Etherton makes his once a year visit to Stamford the problem is that a once in a while check does nothing because many of the taxis from outside the district are working in conjunction with vehicles plated correctly. Many of the Peterborough taxis illegally picking up are acting on tipoffs from their mates operating SKDC plated vehicles and generally grab out of town fares heading back their way. many of the complaints will have been about "Charlies taxis" who operate a mixed fleet of SKDC and RCC plated vehicles using them indiscriminately on bookings proving that the RCC ones are picking up rank work is not easy and as Charlie is shall we say very friendly with richard I doubt he'd have been caught because he'd have known about it in advance
