we should of carried on into baghdad in 1991 and to hell with the consequences,
i was there and dealt with and spoke with the iraqies and knowing what he did and what he would still of being doing was wrong and we were pulled out because of the un and the agreement with saudi arabia.

just think if we'd carried on how much could of been prevented.
but whats going on now with the guerilla war would of still happened.

did you know that an invading army as never overcome guerilla warfare
on invaded territory...!
what i mean by that statement is that guerilla warfare as never been beaten ie stubbed out, it carries on down the generations, somepeople would call it terrorism after a period of time.

I agree totally, was there in 91 too

A political thread, a mention of the Army, some alternative views on the Gulf War, and still no GMBPDB input?

I saw a report somewhere which told of 150 people in a village massacred by Saddam Husseins forces. This compares well with the 150,000 civilians who have died since the invasion?

We cannot police our own country properly - what right do we have to think that we are going to sort out Iraq.

As a mere taxi driver with no military experience I said at the start - The Americans could not sort out Vietnam & the Russians could not sort out Afghanistan - so why does anyone think we are going to put Iraq right.

We were taught in school about the 100 year war that happened centuries ago - well we have just got the new modern version of a 100 year war, history is being re-made and mankind never learns- you will never win in someone elses back yard.

But! the question remains do you stand back and watch the Saddams - Pol Pot - Hitler - I don't think so, they all had to go "How to Despatch of those leaders," now that is the problem.

I dont think backing and arming them is a solution, like we did with Iraq.

Then perhaps it is us who are the problem, we elect the leaders under a supposedly democratic constitution - they (the leaders) get in and do what they want, of which is usually linked to a monetary gain albeit for the country - but scrupples go out of the window. As I see it they need to be made accountable to the electorate, or most certainly an independent committee, as far to much autonomy is granted to these politicians who court your vote and then throw you in the bin once gotten.

I see Gordon Brown is now going forth on his campaign with the idea that the British public might have a say in whether we go to war or not. Ohh really "and pigs might fly" as they say.

why is it all the people with all the answers have actually never served in any form of the Armed services....!!

just wondered how they got the knowledge and experience of these situations, involving & dealing with the people and seeing and understanding 1st hand whats actually involved and the consequences of certain actions or ideas implemented by these so called know it alls
who seem to think they know best, because they've read the books or their own ideals make them believe that they are above the rest and that its their opinions and ideas that are correct and they arent open to negotiation on what the think is correct.

ITS FINE SAT IN THE SAFETY OF OF THEIR OWN HOMES MAYBE THEY SHOULD GO TO THE FRONT LINES AND SEE WHAT THEIR OPINIONS ARE ON THEIR RETURN IF THEY DO RETURN...!!

cant remember ever reading anywhere of someone who's been there and done it preaching on about whats the right way or must do it this way.

think you learn to look at things differently and with a wider scope / outlook

Nobody (except possibly one person) doubts the ability of the British Army, who are the best in the world.

Its the politicians who have consistantly failed the forces, not posters on this website.

Sending troops into battle ill equipped has been a consistant British government approach for many years if not centuries.

Indeed the same politicians have effectively ruined the much admired British Tradition of local regiments.

Perhaps we need to get the Poles in?

TM You will never catch me slagging off our boys. Will you catch me slagging off the politicians? to right you will, they are in it for themselves and get others to do all the dirty work.

I endorse everything C.C wrote.

Regards John
