Coming to a taxi trade near you :?
I am not the brightest spark tdo,so i had to look up the meaning of indigenous in the dictionary(native of a homeland country)! So, why should a person from this country go and earn a living in a place like Dubai,Africa or anywhere else for that matters?..........Maybe it is just because they want to strive for better things.

So maybe that is what our friends from the EU countries like Poland etc are only trying to do themselves!!!!

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander(equality)

By the way,....i think the term white faces seemed a bit off,as what has a persons colour of skin got to do with anything.........

I have some friends in the taxitrade who come from different parts of the globe and they are hard working, friendly and go about the job in a professional manner. Most of them do not see it as a stepping stone to another job, they see it as a job for life and take pride in what they do.

Well of course that's why many British firms like immigrant labour, but my point was that from the perspective of you and me and other British people in the labour market the job becomes less attractive because at the end of the day more immigrant labour means lower earnings for us.

It all depends on where you are in the pecking order - if you hire people and profit from then then clearly if immigrants work for lower wages and do a better job then that's a plus for you, whether you're in the building trade, a farmer or taxi proprietor.

On the other hand, if you're a humble driver like you and me then immigrant labour can only be a bad thing, since in effect it worsens our working conditions. Thus the job may look like a career move for a newly arrived immigrant, but from the other perspective it looks more and more like a stepping stone for people like ye and me.

Another point to bear in mind is perhaps while new immigrants seem a godsend to employers at the outset, in a few years time things might look a bit different, when the immigrants become settled and taxi driving doesn't looks so good anymore.

Look around many English and world cities (like New York) and you'll see that already - the indigenous poplulation doesn't even see it as a stepping stone, so you don't see white faces at all, and by then the immigrants are viewing it as a stepping stone.

Seems to be a bit of a contradiction here Skippy.

most of the runs are a mile to a mile and a half that covers 99% of the town, then there is a housing scheme 3.5 miles out.
So I take £3.00 for the milers the meter shows £3.40, and £5.00 for the 3.5 ones the meter shows 6.90, our rates start at £2.00 then £1.40 per mile before midnight and £3.00 start after I just add a pound
What do you mean by ..add a pound :?

After midnight badger I just add a pound and I am still cheaper

Are you sure you're a taxi driver and don't work for some council's "diversity awareness unit" or suchelike

You don't like my use of the word "indigenous", you don't like "white faces", so what language do you want me to use?

What I'm trying to get across is the economic effects of immigration, and while some in the trade clearly see it as a source of cheap labour, and others like yourself seem to view it in idealisitic terms, but I'd be grateful if you could tell me what terminology I should use to describe the process, or do you think it shouldn't be discussed at all?

I want to make taxi driving a better job, but anyone who sees immigration as an answer to the trade's woes takes the opposite view as far as I'm concerened, and clearly prefers the job to be little more than casual work while they're looking for something better.

The bottom line is that immigration drives down wages and to accuse or at least allude that anyone pointing this out is racist is pathetic.

So would you agree with my analyis then, or do you prefer just to ignore it and start getting mildly insulting?

So British people have gone to work abroad, does this mean that I can't argue against you using immigrant labour to depress your drivers' earnings or that this means I'm lying?

Your response clearly shows that you have little in the way of contrary argument :)

TDO would it be correct to guess you are a single hackney driver ?

you can argue what you want my friend, it is my belief that you do not have the need to recruit staff to meet the demand of the needs ! and if you did you my be of a different view !

i myself will confess to having been of the same mind of yourself only two years ago !! but after visiting the training school for this people and meeting them they turned my view up side down on how polite and keen to work they are.

i will also say i do not employ these drivers they simply hire cars of me in the same way any driver does and what money they make is theirs after deductions !! they are at my office treat the same as any other driver

but if you were receiving 9 to 10 thousand calls in one day and failing to answer 2 thousand and out of the 8 thousand you do answer then tell another 2 thousand your fully booked. and unable to get the correct applicant through the doors from locally you might investigate and recruit form abroad ?

I still can't get it into my head why anyone would need to import workers into the cab trade, in an area with high unemployment.

Are the local folks up there too greedy or a tad thick? :?

Maybe the local people are scared to take the plunge and risk of becoming self employed and as mentioned somewhere else, they get put off by listening to their local drivers whinging all the time.Or maybe they feel that they cant handle the pressure.

On the subject of imported workers within the EU.
If a taxi firm has over 350 drivers it must be doing something right to keep them drivers happy,so if that firm gets to the point where there is not enough drivers to cover the work then who can blame them for looking down other avenues as the customer is always looking for a taxi when they would like it and not tomorrow.

Hey now Sussex ................... calm down you'll do yourself a mischief :x :x

As far as this whole situation goes .................. I, and I suppose everyone else would like to see Local lads making bundles ........... but I think that the idea of having local lads and lasses queuing up to be taxi drivers is as likely as Sir Johns Halls vision of 11 geordies pulling on the famous black and white shirts and running out onto the hallowed turf of St James Park.

I'm suspicious on why a training school should be set up in Prague for people wishing to be taxi drivers in the UK though.

I'm also interested to know how the operators in the UK contact, or are contacted by the people on the course ........................ and who pays for all of the training, flights over to the UK and accommodation.

B. Lucky :D

Well i do not know where you are based :?: .Where i am as far as i know we are all self employed and so are the drivers from overseas,so i do not understand the cheap labour side of your view regarding the taxitrade and drivers from other countries, because as i say we are all on an even keel.

P.S As for your pun asking if i worked for the council
