My own thoughts.

As for stockbrokers, I didn't see many of them telling folks to sell the Northern Rock shares in June when they were £11.50, as opposed to the current price of £1.57.

I bet you didn't see any stockbrokers telling people to sell in June. That would be because you don't watch the stock market like some of us do. My stockbroker was giving out warnings about the banking problems before June. :D
The thing with the stock market is, you can't just decide one day to go and buy stuff. you need to follow the financial markets for a few months to get a feel for it.
If you fancy a bit of fun, why not try your hand at currency trading. if you go to FXCM trading station you can open a dummy account and trade on the currency markets to see how you get on.

Remind me Mr grandad how they are doing.

Northern Rock will be closed on every high street within the year. Only invest if you believe its likely a takeover will happen. Takeover and mergers are pretty stagnent in the current credit squeeze.

It is a very brave person though, who invests in a company whose customers are literally queuing up to leave. I would go so far as to say the shares are that volatile right now, that only gamblers would throw money at them.
MAD - another bank will takeover at about 80p per share. They are banks, they are not daft!

What's this? the TDO financial advice centre, as sponsered by the Northern Rock?

Why didn't he advise you to sell them at £12.50?
