AN IMPATIENT farmer punched a taxi driver in the face as he felt he was
taking too long to pick him up, a court heard yesterday.
George Young – who was the Hawick Cornet at the town's 1999 festival
celebrations – flagged down the cab and carried out the assault on 1 July.
Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard that John Gillie had earlier told the 32-year-old
that he had three other fares to collect before he could take him to his
farmhouse near Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Graham Fraser, prosecuting, said:
"The driver was taking the third fare home when Young stopped his vehicle in
the street and punched him."
It was his third conviction for assault, which included an eight-month jail
term. Sentence was deferred until next month.
