Dam or be dammed? Every licensing authority has its fare share of owners, drivers, operators or whatever, who really couldn't care less about licensing regulations. People bemoan Berwick but if the truth were known Berwick license holders are probably typical of the indifference shown by many license holders to their councils regulations in all 343 licensing authorities in England and Wales.

The inside out program of last week was supposed to highlight a problem that has sprung up from nowhere, the fact is that the problem has been with us for years and will probably remain so for the foreseeable future.

Newcastle had its fair share of private hire PU problems long before Berwick came on the scene and such problems will never be resolved with or without the Berwick situation.

Here is a short video highlighting the fact that it is not only a handful of private hire drivers that intentionally breach licensing regulations but there are also some in the hackney carriage trade who also have a mind of their own when it comes to licensing.

We don't know if this owner has been given special dispensation to display his rear plate in the rear window but if he hasn't then he is certainly sailing close to the legal wind.

Second item shows a P/H vehicle running around town with an unsecured number plate.

The third item highlights the divide between the age limitation policy in respect of public service vehicles and taxis.

The inside out program highlighted a Berwick hackney cab with a plate in the rear window rather than fixed to the body of the vehicle. The point is that this type of thing goes on all over the country and Manchester is no exception.

I don't get the point either.

Some Taxi Drivers don't secure their taxi or number plates in the prescribed manor......

This matters why?

If the LO sees an infraction with the vehicle (e.g. dodgy tyres) I believe he has the right to remove the plate on the spot, even if the vehicle is locked and driver nowhere to be seen. That's difficult to do if it's on the inside of the cab.

Why?......It shows an unprofessional and sloppy attitude to the job.

They are the same people that don't bother to clean their cars.

TF pi$$ed on his chips.

In Manchester and most other places it just happens to be unlawful to display a plate on a hackney carriage anywhere other than is stated by the council. I'm surprised some people don't realise that.

Private hire vehicles are in the same position but they are governed by the 1976 LGMPA unless you happen to be in London.

That's why I highlighted the rarity. It's not often you see a Manchester hack driving around with a plate in the rear Window.

We have the same rule here and obviously all taxis have to display no smoking stickers as well. Having said that the last 2 cars to be plated here have been inspected by the enforcement officer and one has no stickers and the other has the plate in the back window.
