What's the alternative then? :?

sussex whats the point in fighting to get a plate then sell it and rem the plate never even seen a taxi b4 it was sold.

come on sussex you know what iam on about it stinks that people come on here and say its not right that plates cost so much and its not right to put people in debt to buy one then go and do what they say is wrong do you think they were right in doing this and dont say its the system that caused this to happen as in this case it was not.

double standards and pure greed IMO

so much for the right to have your own taxi and work the hours you want and escape the evil owners and there rentals

If the system did not allow the exploitation of drivers to create an artificial plate value the sale of plates would not become an issue.

Think about it for a moment!

Everytime a plate is sold some mug desperate to own buys in.

Their system, their rules.

my point is skull you want to do away with the system that is in place right now and thats your right to fight to change that and i respect anyone who fights for what they Believe in whether i agree with them or not.

what i cant undrstand is someone who wins there arguament and then uses the system they hate and want to change to make a quick buck and land someone with a 50k loan. i just cant get my head round how someone can fight for a plate then sell it. if they did not want it why did they not withdraw there application???

IMO its either pure madness or greed

would you agree that you want to change the system for the benefit of everyone
so that joe blogs does not have to put himself in to debt to own his own taxi??

We must remember that 100% of plates sold were originally got for nothing. Whether it was sold in months rather than years really shouldn't matter.

I think all plates should be got from the council for nothing and on demand. That ends the selling once and for all.

But the more the folks in Edinburgh make about Ali selling his plate the better, cos eventually the powers that be will get the hump that their rules allow Ali to do what Ali did.

Change the rules and the problem goes.

It should also be remembered that if he hadn't bought ali's plate, he would have bought somebody elses. He was going to buy in anyway.

Here in Renfrewshire the local authority has a long history of making up its own rules, one of which regards plate transfers -

Current taxi licence holders may apply for a surrender and reissue of their licence. Current policy dictates that the current licence holder has held their taxi licence for a period not less than 5 years. The proposed licence holder must have held a taxi driver licence for a period not less than 2 years. The application form below can be downloaded, completed and returned to the licensing office with the appropriate application fee.

Surrender and Re-issue of Taxi Licence £54

Where they plucked the 5 years & 2 years from I don't know

The system allows you certain options:

Buy in - 50K+?

Sell out - 50K+?

Make application and fight the council in court?

Remain a driver and pay ever increasing rentals with fewer job opportunities?

Your money, your choice.

To beat the system you have to make (its) weaknesses, your strengths‘.

The above, will eventually bring down the walls of Jericho.

Where’s the tipping point?

What happens when people buy in, or sell out for 80K?

What happens when drivers can’t get jobs or make a decent living because of the ridiculous rentals they have to pay?

You might disagree with some people on an individual bases but does it really matter?

Yes, there will be winners and losers but the game goes on - no one really wins and no one really loses- things just change. Some don’t want change while others embrace it - now that’s the real choice but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your perspective) that choice almost never comes without a fight.

thats not the point gusmac my point is why fight to have a plate to avoid having to pay a stupid amount of money to have your own taxi then sell it and have to pay a over priced rental instead it defies logic.
the others who won the right to have a plate still have theres i understand and good luck to them they set out to get what they wanted and thats great they are making a living with no 50k weight round there neck.

the system is wrong i think we all agree with that but its not right IMO to sell the plate you have fought for it makes the fight for everyone to have the right a joke.

Some may think it's not right, but getting £50,000 for nothing doesn't defy logic. :?

I hear what you're saying, Chipper. Ali got his plate through court action instead of paying a ridiculous sum for it. Regardless of how he got it, the system allows any plate holder to sell his plate on for whatever price they can get. There is nothing to stop him applying for more plates and attempting to have a court grant them. At the end of the day it is the system that is wrong. If all plates were sold for the same price originally paid then their would be no market for them, since all were originally granted FOC from the council. Ali's actions highlight the failings of the system.
The system is the joke and every time something like this happens it becomes more obvious.

I'm sure a black and white situation would satisfy your need for clarity and justice but that's not how the real world works.

Try and accept that there is no black and white but only shades of grey :-|

skull you talk a load of tosh at times this is nothing to do with justice or how the real world works

i agree that the system is wrong and if there is a need for more taxis they should issue more plates IMO i dont think that the taxi trade could handle a free for all right now as the PH trade cant and is shrinking (fact) due to the credit [edited by admin]
so iam going to ask you to answer this simple question.

do you think its right to fight against a system that you think is wrong then use it to your financial benefit (no grey answer now  )

now dont use the "its there rules" line skull that wont wash
