A CWMBRAN boy was left lying on his own in the road with a broken leg for 20 minutes after he says a taxi driver drove into him following a dispute over the fare.
Michael Board, 17 of Stonebridge Park had been out in Newport on Saturday with a friend following a family party when he flagged down a taxi outside ‘Grubs Up’ in Skinner Street between 3.30am and 4am on Sunday.
After dropping off Michael’s friend in Coed Eva, the taxi driver then carried on to drop Michael off.
Michael’s mother Rosanna said he had tried to direct the taxi driver to his home but his directions were not being followed.
This led to the car stopping at Rose Gardens off North Road.
Mrs Board said: "Because of the long route the driver had taken, the fare had gone well above the £15 which Michael had saved for the fare.
"In a moment of madness he panicked and tried to run away from the taxi."
Mrs Board said the taxi had then been driving backwards and forwards scaring Michael.
When Michael then tried to run across the road, the driver drove straight at him. She said the driver then got out and carried on kicking at Michael’s leg demanding his money.
She said: "Michael told me he was apologising and telling the driver he had broken his leg but he just carried on attacking him. It breaks my heart to think about it."
After Michael gave the taxi driver what money he had left the driver drove off. This left Michael having to ring for his own ambulance.
He was taken to the Royal Gwent where doctors operated on his leg on Tuesday.
Michael had broken two of the bones in his leg.
One was broken in three different places while the other was broken in two. He currently has a rod with three screws going through his leg from just below the knee to his ankle.
Mrs Board said: "All Michael knows is that the taxi was a black car and that the driver was Asian, in his 40s and wearing glasses."
Police are now appealing for witnesses following the incident.
