Do you mean 'operator' as in running a vehicle or running an office or both?

Well each council has different rules, so you would really need to contact Glasgow City Council.

If anyone wants to know their local rules then try using google to search for any page on licensing that your council might have, eg:

taxi private hire glasgow

If your LA has a page then chances are it will be pretty high up the google results page.

Some LAs websites give a fair bit of detail, while others don't, but they usually provide an appropriate phone number.

As regards Glasgow in particular, you won't need a license for your office, but will do for cars and drivers.

There's some fairly detailed info available via the following page:

http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Business/Licences/Taxi/

Our FAQ also provides some general advice on starting in the trade, and can be found at:

Hi
You dont need an operators license in Glasgow to run a Private Hire Company. You will need planning permission for your office.

Various start up costs with your company. Things to consider

1. Radio System (what coverage do you want).
2. Phone system (single lines or acutally phone system).
3. Radio licence

The above are just a few of the things you will have to consider and will cost money.

regards

Hi Di Nero

Best of luck with your venture but one word of caution...

As far as I have heard in Glasgow it is the 'hard men' who run the scene so take care

I remember about ten years ago there were tales of small companies being forced to sell up or else

Can anyone else give us an update on the Glasgow scene ?

Hi
There are 29 PH companies in Glasgow, ranging from 10 car fleets to 750 car fleets.

Anyone can start an office and its been years since there has been any sort of trouble. Competition is healthy

The "Hard Men" thing can be a good thing in a way...

I know of one base that opened, the guy ran it for a few month then was offered way over the odds for it - he took advantage of the offer and walked away with a tidy sum - then opened again in a different area!

Glasgow Private Hire more or less wants what it's name suggests - the lot of Glasgow.

I work for them (well, I rent a radio and run my car) - and they dominate the City Centre and the East End - having big contracts such as Glasgow City Council Social Work, Celtic Football Club etc etc

I don't know how the smaller companies earnings fair - but I have seen a right few cars sitting ranked up while we are shouting out for cars.

Good Luck with the venture mate!

P.S - @ Renfrewshire Driver - I beleive the "Hard Men" or "Front Men" originate from your neck of the woods - Paisley (or so the story goes....)

I am saying nothing.....but I would not advise him to try opening a company in Paisley

One company...80,000 population

Enough said

Hi
A bit misleading. There is one major private hire company and one TOA in Paisley. Then you have the various groups at the airport.

Now if you start looking at Johnstone, Erskine, Renfrew etc you will (as you know) find a lot of other companies who all operate under the Renfrewshire Council banner.

How many companies are there in Renfrewshire then?

regards
