'Amnesty For 500,000 Illegal Workers'
A union leader has suggested an amnesty for 500,000 illegal workers in the UK saying it would be 'immoral' to deport them.

The comments came after it was revealed five illegal immigrants employed in government offices had been there for years, contrary to claims that were caught on their first day.

Jack Dromey, deputy general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union and Labour Party treasurer, said: "Yes, it is true that there are probably half a million here without documents. The question is what we do about that.

"They live in fear of a knock on the door and they are exploited by too many employers.

"Our economy needs migrant labour -they are essential to our economy.

"Many have been here for three, five, 10 years. It would simply be impracticable, but also immoral, to deport half a million people.

"You can't deport half a million workers. Who would clean? Who would cook? Who would pick our fields? The time has come for a debate around an amnesty for those worker.

Well Jack, you should get off your bum and fight for decent wages for the cleaners , fruit pickers etc. then we would not need migrant workers . After all I and many like me , pay the T&G to do just that . Not feed the world . What about all those London Taxi touts, do we need them .Come on Jack start representing the people who pay your wages , not your self. streetcars

Maybe he wants the immigrants to drive the taxis in restricted areas, to keep his plate holding members sweet.

So then Captain I take it you and the N T A are all for this Amnesty For 500,000 Illegal Workers’? Are you in the T&G Captain? I pay the wages of this so called
Union leader I feel I am quite entitled to have a go at him. You have missed the point; he is supposed to fight for better wages for the people at the bottom. That’s his job. Not I can’t be arsed, we will just let illegals do their jobs and sod the poor legal cleaner, fruit picker, Taxi drivers and any other low paid worker. In fact a huge supply of cheap labour . will keep his members wages at rock bottom . This proves to me you and the N T A don’t give a toss about the normal working person. Only the wannabe taxi barons come businessmen of this world. .

Don't tell me, you have your eyes on some for your own firm?

So presumably GBC's arguments cut little ice?

Surely no one disagrees that an influx of immigrant labour is detrimental to the earnings of people like cab drivers, so why should the cab trade encourage it, unless it's vehicle operators looking for drivers?

Captain If your looking for drivers. I know of nine Afghan hijackers looking for work . No trouble with criminal record disclosure. As according to a court they did nothing wrong. They are used to driving around bombed out Afghanistan , so they will be quite at home in Carlisle. streetcars .

Errm,

I made a statement, this country was built on the backs of migrant workers.

Who do you think built most of the railways?

Construction began in 1869 and lasted for seven long years with about 6,000 men working on the line - the last main line railway in England constructed almost entirely by hand. Hundreds of railway builders ("navvies") lost their lives building the line, from a combination of accidents, fights, and smallpox outbreaks. In particular, building the Ribblehead (then Batty Moss) viaduct, with its 24 massive stone arches 104 feet (32 metres) above the moor, caused such loss of life that the railway paid for an expansion of the local graveyard. Memorials along the line, especially that at St Leonards' Church, Chapel-le-dale, near Ribblehead, commemorate the lives of some of the men who died building the line.

And Liverpools wealth?

Liverpool's ships and traders controlled most of the slave trade from 1750 until abolition (the end of slavery) in 1807. 33-50% of Liverpool's activity at that time involved slavery in some way. This may have been in trading slaves, in ship repair or importing goods from the Americas. The town made a lot of money from slavery and as a result Liverpool grew.

So thanks, but leave your presumptions for someone else, I made a statement.

Thats a question

The LA lay down the criteria for becoming taxi and PH drivers as you know.

Are people suggesting making a different criteria for migrant workers?

Indeed, if your on about more drivers cutting earnings then isnt that the same as more licenses cutting earnings?

Theres another thread on here from a lady whose family are moving to the Plymouth area, aren't they migrants too?

To this competition of the worker there is but one limit; no worker will work for less than he needs to subsist. If he must starve, he will prefer to starve in idleness rather than in toil. True, this limit is relative; one needs more than another, one is accustomed to more comfort than another; the Englishman who is still somewhat civilized, needs more than the Irishman who goes in rags, eats potatoes, and sleeps in a pigsty. But that does not hinder the Irishman's competing with the Englishman, and gradually forcing the rate of wages, and with it the Englishman's level of civilization, down to the Irishman's level.
