Sacked teacher still unemployed four years later

A SACKED teacher who won a claim for unfair dismissal four years ago says he’s still struggling to find a new job.

John Whitehead, a former teacher at Corley School in Church Lane, Corley, was sacked in 2002 for gross misconduct after a door was slammed on a child’s hand.

Political reporter Les Reid's blog: Why party policies are more important that politicians' personalities

An employment tribunal in 2006 concluded that Mr Whitehead, formerly of Lime Tree Avenue, Tile Hill, had been unfairly dismissed. He left Coventry to make a fresh start in Wales.

But since then, he says he’s found it hard to get employment.

Coventry City Council hasn’t given him a reference and he has ‘‘warnings’’ on his Criminal Record Bureau check.

He said: “It is not fair for someone with my talent as a teacher that I can’t even get a job as a taxi driver.

“None of the warnings have anything to do with child protection. For an employer who sees all those warnings, who are they going to trust – me or the city council? They will make a decision about me just from seeing that.”

The 54-year-old taught in Coventry schools for more than 20 years and continues to have a clean teaching licence after he was cleared by the General Teaching Council. He has vowed to keep fighting to clear his CRB check.

He received more than £61,000 in compensation but says his life was turned upside down by the saga.

“How I have been treated is totally unfair, and the employment tribunal said it was unfair, but the bottom line is that I served the people of Coventry loyally for more than 20 years and never had any complaints about my work. But on that particular day an incident happened and it cost me my life,” he added.

“I have got past the bitter and twisted stage now but the effect it had on us at the time was phenomenal. The answer was to move out of Coventry.’’

Mr Whitehead, a father-of-two, moved to Wales three years ago and set up an eco guest house in Gwynedd with his wife.

While their guest house brings in a small amount of income, Mr Whitehead continues to look for other work but says he will never return to Coventry.

A spokesman for the Criminal Records Bureau said anyone who applies for a job to work with children or vulnerable adults needs to have an Enhanced CRB check, which brings to light any involvement with police, even if there is no charge.

He said: “The CRB plays a vital role in safeguarding children but it is unfortunate that Mr Whitehead cannot find a job because of his CRB check.’’

Unfortunately CC society in the main sees us in this vain but don't say it to our faces unless p....d up to the eyeballs and wondering why we don't want to take 'em.... or maybe those who use cabs on a regular basis....
We all want our rubbish collected and don't appreciate the guys or gals who collect it....
We all want cabs at some time in our lives, but most wouldn't want to do the job.... Maybe we are just taken for granted just as others are..... Mind you I don't think I would want to be a teacher in today's PC environment or anything to do with kids these days. I used to be a martial arts teacher (adults & kids) but stopped because of all the "iffs" and PC I was coming up against...... Quite honestly I'm getting to the point where I do not feel "professional" in the trade anymore..... :-| But life these days is dog eat dog so I'm just surviving much the same as you ......
