I hope you don't have similar ambitions on here though, yet another website using the word taxi but ran by minicab drivers.

Well it's a contentious issue and confuses the public.

What's the point of not allowing PH cars to display the word taxi (say) yet the are allowed to advertise as a taxi firm.

Another OFT ommission.

But the econometric modelling exercises are quite good.

As a licensed Private Hire driver in the Gateshead area, I am visually familiar with the vehicles of the aforementioned company. It seems to me that they have a mixed fleet of HC, saloon and WAV, TAXIS in other words! Also a proportionate number of PHV, PRIVATE HIRE in other words! Therefore, a reasonable person may conclude that the word Taxi is being used correctly. Goodnight. 8) 8) 8)

The point was that I'm sure that one of the people involved with the firm has in the past criticised the use of the term 'taxi' in associatiation with PH cars.

The firm may operate some taxis, but the point is, surely, that the implication of the site seems to be that all the firms vehicles are taxis, and to that extent it misleads. How many taxis do you think a firm needs to operate before it calls itself a taxi firm? One taxi, more than half the fleet, or what?

I can't see the point in banning PH cars from displaying the word 'taxi' when a firm describing itself as a taxi firm operates PHV cars.

It's this sort of thing that has confused the public, as mentioned in the OFT report, but did they recommend doing anything about it?

No, they didn't even really mention the sources of the confusion.

To be honest I'm not particularly bothered what the firm does, because the use of terminology has become so confusing and misleading that one particular firm doing what many others do is neither here nor there, but I did think there was an element of double standards.

I was stopped by police one night and asked for my details. When I gave my occupation as Private Hire Driver he said "In other words you are a Taxi Driver", and wrote taxi driver on the producer. If I had been a pedantic, nit-picking malcontent I may have taken issue with him, but as it was I just let it go by, producing my documents the next day and suffering no lasting emotional or phsycological effects as a result of being called the wrong name!!! 8) 8) 8)

I wonder if he realised fully that you were a PH driver, whether he might have fined you more. :D

To give some idea of what he did realise, when I asked why I had been stopped he said, "I wanted to know what you are doing riding around at this hour of night". Granted it was 4.15 am and I told him I was doing the nightshift at the company whose name and telephone number were on magnetic signs on my two rear doors. I also drew his attention to the licence plate securely fixed to the rear bumper with the words PRIVATE HIRE VEHICLE on it plus the name of the council and the licence number. His mind-numbing reply to this was,"But you have not got anyone in your car!!!" JESUS!!! Anyway, I did not get fined as no offence had been committed and I have also had a clean driving licence since 1976. 8) 8) 8)
