can i get a dbs direct with the DBS service?

I don't think you can anymore. The reason for the higher price is because most councils use a 3rd party to process the checks and that is where the extra money goes. I suppose a freedom of information check asking who they use and how much they charge may help.

yet the DBS service will process a basic DBS

Council have confirmed they have reduced the fee to £38 for DBS check.
