Another to add to the list is kale. Living and working on a farm, driving tractors, baling, although not allowed near the combine harvester, aged 12 onwards, before leaving school at 14, (two days before my 15th birthday) anyway, I digress. Kale is now a “superfood” back in the day, it was cattle fodder.
Blimey, that was a Posh Farm, ours had two old Tractor towed binders which had a man sitting on a seat at the back of it to make sure it mainly kept working, then another couple of guys following on behind to stack the sheaves,....and then all that would go to a hired in threshing machine when one arrived.....it took a squad of about 10 men and women a week to do what 1 man can do can now do in less than a day with a modern combine harvester.....and when the farm did get a combine that was also a tractor towed type, as kids we used to go down with sticks to try and catch rabbits at the finishing as they were flushed from an ever shrinking field of oats.
Warm happy late summer days.
