Dear all ,
I have got the germ of an idea for a new movie, suggestions will flood in I know.
Basically it is a sea faring story that ends in tragedy (done before I know but lets see).
Opening shot.. Handsome young man from a southern town with more seagulls than people..played by Richard Gere..The young man is sat on a bench staring out to sea, from a distance the young man is muttering to himself constantly,we close in to hear him saying "not long now,not long now"
Scene two.
We meet a new character Orville Frederick Thomas (OFT for short) he reckons that nobody should be restricted to sailing around the local boating lake but should be allowed on the oceans of the world. What a great idea some say, if others can do it why can't we? Regardless of the fact many of them are sailing in vessels that are not of the standard required to put to sea, and many of the crew only come out at weekends for fun. Regulations? who needs them.
Scene three.
The big day arrives and off they go following our hero OFT,forgetting that he has never put to sea himself. You are sailing in uncharted waters and trouble will surely follow they are told but they blithely sail on. OFT assures them that he studied all aspects of this sailing lark and not to worry.
Scene four.
The lookout posted in the Halcrows nest spots an iceberg bit to late for our intrepid voyagers and our brave new fleet starts to flounder. OFT shouts for them not to worry, he has worked out that there is an estimated 15,000 vessels plying the oceans so rescue is at hand. Besides we will only be waiting on average 15 seconds, no worries there then. If any doubts what he is saying he refers them to his studies in the great sea faring ports of Sheffield and Cambridge.
Scene five.
In the distance a huge Leviathen approaches, we can't see its name yet but we can see a little yellow light on top bearing the legend "FOR HIRE"
Now we see the vessel a little clearer, first launched in 1847, refitted in 1976 and 1985, plying its trade successfully all thes years because most of its crew have sunk their money and borrowed to keep it afloat. The vessel does what it is intended to do and stops when it sees people waving at it. They are surprised at the number of people in the water, ther appears a lot more than the 15,000 that old OFT predicted. Because if you offer something for nothing then you should be aware that there will be a lot of takers. The rescue begins to take place but something strange starts to happen... when the people were in the water there looked to be a lot of room on the ship but now when they were on board they begin to wonder if the ship is now full. Anyway the rescue ship does its best but now is beginning to flounder under the influx of numbers and still there are people waiting to come aboard.
Scene six.
Back to our young handsome hero still in the water, clutching at a piece of wood ( or is a straw?),the cold is getting to him and as he slowly slips below the waves a final close up reveals that he still thinks he will be rescued and he is still saying "not long now" as he goes under.
Scene seven.
Back on board the now sinking rescue vessel (maybe the Q.E II or perhaps the TX II) we see a young Cockney sailor called Maurice telling anybody that would listen that he knew this would happen all along.
Miraculously the only one saved is our friend OFT and he quickly recovers to see which industry to destroy next.
Final scene.
Ship slowly sinking.
Celine Dion warbling away over closing credits.
THE END ( I hope not )
Ged B de Mille

Firstly, that last sentence will thankfully never happen.

The movie will no-doubt be an epic, with many twists and turns.

But like in many epics the hero i.e. ME will win in the end, and get the girl, or in this case the boat, or in reality freedom of choice.

However I do like the handsome bit.
