Five people were injured when a van that failed to stop for police went the wrong way down a motorway and collided with a taxi.
West Yorkshire Police said after failing to stop at about 22:45 BST on Monday, the van was driven the wrong way on the southbound M606 from the Chain Bar roundabout towards Bradford.
It then collided with a taxi, leaving five people injured, three critically.

The M606 remains shut in both directions.
National Highways said investigation work was expected to continue throughout the morning and urged drivers to use an alternative route.
West Yorkshire Police said the Independent Office for Police Conduct had been informed about the incident due to the involvement of a police vehicle before the collision.

I really hope they press severe charges against these maniacs

Boy, 15, arrested after three die in wrong-way M606 crash

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing a fatal motorway crash which killed three people.

A suspected stolen van had failed to stop for police before it drove the wrong way along the M606, near Bradford, and collided with a taxi.

The taxi driver, 28, his passenger, aged 48, and a male van passenger, 18, died following Monday night's crash.

The teenager, who was injured in the crash, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He remains in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to West Yorkshire Police.

Another 17-year-old van passenger remains in hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the force said.

West Yorkshire Police said it had referred itself to watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The IOPC said initial investigations suggested the van was stolen and police did not follow the van onto the motorway.

Regional director Thea Walton said there would be "a thorough, independent investigation to understand exactly what has happened" and it would contact the families of those involved.

Taxi boss' emotional tribute to 'popular driver and friend to many' Sohail Ali killed in M606 tragedy

Taxi Driver Sohail Ali

A taxi firm has paid an emotional tribute to driver Sohail Ali who died in a horror crash on the M606 near Bradford that claimed the lives of three men.

Sohail Ali, 28, was driving a taxi that was hit head-on by a Ford Transit van being driven the wrong way down the M606 on Monday night after it had failed to stop for police.

Sohail died alongside his passenger Simon McHugh, 49, who was being driven to his home in Lindley, Huddersfield, following his shift at Jury's Inn, Bradford, where he worked as head chef. The third victim was Kyden Leadbeater, 18, a passenger in the van.

Sohail, from Bradford, worked for Zip, a taxi firm based in Tong Street, Bradford. He worked there alongside his father and an uncle, and was popular with customers.

A company boss posted a tribute to Sohail on social media, saying: "Myself and everyone at Zip are in complete shock at what has happened to Sohail, one of our most popular drivers and friend to many.

"Our sincere condolences go to his family. Sohail’s Dad and Uncle, Ansur and Amjad also work at Zip. Words cannot express how we are feeling. Our thoughts are also with the family of Simon and all at Jury’s Inn. Both will be sorely missed."

Sohail had previously worked as a driver for Arrivals Cars, a taxi firm in Shipley, Bradford, but hadn't worked there for some time. On Tuesday a worker at Arrivals told YorkshireLive : "He was a very good lad and will be missed by the community.

"He was a very hard worker and a very good driver. A few people have been ringing up and sending condolences. It is shocking more than anything. He was just doing his job."

Yesterday Sohail's uncle, Amar Khan, said: "He was young, enthusiastic, happy, kind and gentle. He had many cousins and relatives who always looked up to him. He was a friend to all of them.

"His friends are absolutely distraught. It is very sad and shocking - he was only 28. It is a massive shock."

Mr Khan said Sohail had always worked as a taxi driver and enjoyed his work. He said: "From a young age, all his customers would ask for Sohail to pick them up. He really enjoyed helping the elderly and would take their shopping into their house. He loved it. He was calm and made people feel comfortable with his presence. He was a beautiful soul.

"He is going to be dearly missed by all his family, friends and the community."

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the circumstances of the collision. West Yorkshire Police have arrested a boy, 15, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Certainly young for a driver in the trade. If I'd read the thread quickly and didn't take in the details I'd have assumed that was the driver who's been charged in the photograph :-|

Teenager who caused deaths of two men and taxi driver in M606 horror crash to be sentenced

Image
Three people were killed in a horror crash on the M606 on June 13

A teenager will be sentenced later this month for causing the deaths of three men on the M606.

The 16-year-old - who cannot be named for legal reasons - indicated a plea of guilty to three counts of causing death by dangerous driving during his appearance at Bradford Magistrates' Court last month following the collision on the M606. The incident saw a van being driven the wrong way up the motorway crash head-on into a taxi on June 13, 2022.

Two people died at the scene: 28-year-old taxi driver Sohail Ali and 49-year-old taxi passenger and chef Simon McHugh. The next day, 18-year-old Kyden Leadbeater died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy of West Yorkshire Police's Major Collision Enquiry Team said at the time: "This is a very tragic incident where three people have lost their lives, our thoughts are with their families at this time."

The case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as a police car had been in the vicinity of the crash at the time. IOPC Regional Director Thea Walton said: "This was a tragic incident that has resulted in three people losing their lives. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

"We understand this will have caused considerable concern in the community and I would like to reassure people that there will be a thorough, independent investigation to understand exactly what has happened."

Last month, family, friends, and colleagues paid tribute to Sohail Ali, saying he was a kind and helpful person who was dedicated to his job as a taxi driver. His uncle, Amar Khan, said: "He was young, enthusiastic, happy, kind and gentle. He had many cousins and relatives who always looked up to him. He was a friend to all of them.

"His friends are absolutely distraught. It is very sad and shocking - he was only 28. It is a massive shock. From a young age, all his customers would ask for Sohail to pick them up. He really enjoyed helping the elderly and would take their shopping into their house. He loved it. He was calm and made people feel comfortable with his presence. He was a beautiful soul."

Mr McHugh's brother, Alastair, told YorkshireLive his brother was "the most gentle, kind and wonderful person in the world." He said: "He would do anything for anybody. He would have been back in Huddersfield if he had gone on the train. Cooking was his passion in life, he didn't really have any other hobbies apart from loving Abba. Simon is too young to have gone. It is all so needless."

Tributes were also paid to Mr Leadbeater, with someone writing on Facebook: "Can not believe I’m writing this to one of my closest friends from babys RIP kydenso many memories That I will cherish forever!

"U always made sonnie-lee smile with your silly faces where gonna miss you so much mate Kyden Leadbeater. Thinking of all of his family and friend"

As he appeared at Bradford Crown Court over a video link, the teenager was told he would be sentenced on August 30, when a pre-sentence report had been produced. David McGongal, prosecuting, told the court the 16-year-old had indicated guilty pleas to the charges during his appearance at the Youth Court.

Because of his age I suspect it will be 2-4 years.

'Justice was not served': Family of taxi driver killed on M606 speak of anger at sentence

Image
Jack Simpson

https://www.asianimage.co.uk/news/north ... -sentence/

THE family of a taxi driver who was killed in the horrific M606 crash has told the Telegraph & Argus that justice “was not served”.

The life of 28-year-old Sohail Ali was cruelly cut short when the cab he was driving was hit head-on by a stolen Ford Transit van being driven by Jack Simpson. He was only 15 at the time and on the wrong side of the motorway.

Mr Ali and his passenger Simon McHugh, 49, were pronounced dead at the scene, while 18-year-old Kyden Leadbeater, a passenger in the van, died in hospital the following day.

Simpson pleaded guilty to three charges of causing death by dangerous driving and one charge of dangerous driving on the same date.

He was sentenced to six years’ detention and will serve half that period, less his time on remand, then will be released on licence.

It means he will be approaching the age of 19 when he is freed. The sentence has prompted dismay and anger from the victims’ families as well as the wider public.

In a statement to the T&A, Mr Ali’s family said they had been left shocked. They said they had struggled to find closure, particularly as they had to wait to get his personal items back from police and were given trainers belonging to someone else.

“We and many, many other people believe justice was not served and this gentleman will be free to live his life freely after three years in prison,” said Mr Ali’s family.

“This is a person who took three innocent lives and affected countless others by his reckless actions.”

They said Simpson “totally understood what he was doing at the time” and added: “He has been treated as a minor and given a sentence shorter than some people receive for smaller charges such as assault.

“No consideration was given to the impact the losses have had on the families of all three that were killed that day by Simpson."

They slammed it as "a true miscarriage of justice.”

The family said Mr Ali’s father had been promised “on many occasions” the return of his son’s belongings.

Some have now been returned, they said, after many emails and phone calls.

In one awful blow, the family said Mr Ali’s father was given trainers belonging to someone else.

They added: “We felt as though we would have had some closure with the sentencing and return of his belongings, however, we are left in disbelief over the sentence given and still awaiting the return of his belongings.”

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy of the Major Collision and Enquiry team said: “We understand the trauma and grief a family experience when losing a loved one in such sudden circumstances. There were certain items of property we needed to retain as part of the investigation.

“Once the investigation concluded, we tried to return some of the property back as soon as possible.

“Unfortunately, trainers which Mr Sohail’s family believed were his, on seeing them were not and we apologise for the distress this has caused his family.

“We are carrying out a review of all the property seized during the investigation so we can formally identify which property belongs to whom.”

In a hearing last week, Judge Richard Mansell QC, the Recorder of Bradford, said the sentences “will be regarded by many as placing a wholly inadequate value on the lives of Mr Ali, Mr McHugh and Mr Leadbeater”.

He told Simpson: “They are not intended to place a value on their lives, and the sentences are in truth the maximum sentences I could pass on you for such offences.”

Mr McHugh’s brother Alastair wrote on Facebook: “Is that justice? So upset it hurts it hurts so much! My brother’s life only seems to be worth 12 months.”

Sentencing Simpson, Judge Mansell told him: "Life is priceless".

In his remarks, he stated: “Nothing that I can do by way of sentencing you today can possibly compensate the families and friends of these three men who tragically lost their lives as a result of your senseless driving of that van.

“The sentence should not be taken as putting a value on their lives. Life is priceless.

“You will carry with you for the rest of your life the responsibility for killing these three young men and bringing untold grief and pain to their families.”
