Saw this last week, but by the standards of tariff rise articles it was so unremarkable I barely bothered reading it.

But this rehash in the Scottish Sun is a tad over the top, using the h-word (which I know Sussex at least doesn't like) and then referring to a 'major shake up'.

Thing is, although the flagfall increases are 15% or so in percentage terms, in the current economic context in particular they're not very much at all, and starting from a very low base.

And there's very little in terms of numbers to go on anyway. And the rest of the piece is just a straight bat rehash of the Glasgow Times piece.

On the other hand, looks like the last part of the piece is intended to add a bit of balance, and it's about the increased 'gate' charges and drop-fees at Aberdeen Airport. But what that really has to do with council tariffs in North Lanarkshire is anyone's guess :?

NOT FARE Scottish council hikes taxi fares in major shake up

Find out how much the increase is below

A SCOTS council has approved a hike in taxi fares in a major shake-up for the area.

The price of hailing a cab in North Lanarkshire will rise from £2.60 to £3 for distances of up to 880 yards.

There will also be charges when taxis are called but not used between the hours of 5am and midnight, where the rate was £2.40 but will become £3, reports the Glasgow Times.

Meanwhile, the charge will rise from £3.40 to £4 for those called between midnight and 5am.

The price hike was approved by the local authority following a consultation with North Lanarkshire Joint Taxi Trade Association.

Other reasons included increased insurance premiums and the need to attract new people to the trade.

The price hikes were unanimously approved by North Lanarkshire Council’s Finance and Resources committee at a recent meeting.

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: "The council, as the licensing authority, must review taxi fares and other charges every 18 months.

"In response to a consultation, the North Lanarkshire Joint Taxi Trade Association proposed an increase in the fares by distance charged and a number of other increases, and these were approved by the council’s Finance and Resources Committee.

"The new fares will come into effect from 1 May 2024.

"The association gave a number of reasons for the increased charges: cost of living increases have significantly reduced the income of taxi operators; rising fuel costs; significant increased costs of replacing vehicles; increased maintenance, running costs and insurance premiums; and the need to attract new operators and drivers to the trade."

We recently told how airport taxi drivers in a Scots city saw a 150 per cent rise to their drop-off fee.

The official taxi firm for the airport saw the current £2 fare increase to £5.

A memo was sent to drivers explaining the change before the firm increased its weekly barrier fee to £200.

Bosses explained that the price hike comes as part of a model which is set to offer more flexibility to drivers.

The uplift was recommended for approval due to factors including the cost of living for taxi operators, rising fuel prices, and the expense of replacing vehicles.

And not difficult to discern the difference in tone from the headline and strapline to the article the Scottish Sun has rehashed above:

North Lanarkshire Council has approved an increase in taxi fares within the local authority area.

If a punter is not going to use/book a cab for 40p, then so be it.

However, the only people who panic when cabs go up 40p, are journalists wanting folks to click on their articles, and drivers who think they are running charitable operations.
