This is the official North Yorks Police news release, which has been rehashed in numerous news outlets.

But you kind of get the impression that there may be more to this than meets the eye. It's an 18-mile run, so a decent fare, but it's hardly a gold bullion heist :-o

And while there's the odd reported court case involving runners, how often do we see a CCTV police appeal about a basic runner, which took place over two months ago? Can't really recall one... :?

Appeal to trace man after non-payment of taxi fare

We’ve issued this CCTV of a man we would like to speak to after someone made off without payment from a taxi in Scarborough.

A taxi was ordered by a male from Pickering to Scarborough. On arrival in Scarborough the man failed to pay the fare.

It happened at between 4.30am to 5am on the 29 February and a number of enquiries have already been carried out but the identity of the offender remains outstanding.

Please contact us if you recognise the man pictured on CCTV, as he may have information that will assist our investigation.

Email joanne.bell@northyorkshire.police.uk if you can help. Alternatively, you can call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for PC1488 Bell or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via their website.

I wonder if complaints have been made to the local police that they haven't been dealing with runners, or other issues that have negatively affected the trade.

Which is why this complaint is receiving a lot of attention.

Next it'll be on Crimewatch and they'll be liaising with Interpol
