Yes, that's right - the taxi driver is the 70-year-old, and it was a grandad he stabbed with the screwdriver
Taxi driver stabbed grandad with a screwdriver in Halloween road rage face offhttps://www.lancs.live/news/lancashire- ... r-32817969'We just cannot have drivers fighting in the street with weapons over who is going ro reverse'A taxi driver stabbed a grandad with a screwdriver in a Halloween stand-off over right of way.
Tariq Mahmood, 70, came face-to-face with his victim in a double parked street in Darwen, shortly before 9pm on October 31, 2022.
Neither of the drivers was prepared to give way as a road rage incident unfolded in the street, Preston Crown Court heard. The driver of the other vehicle - who had his stepson and grandson on board - got out of the car and kicked the wingmirror of Mahmood's taxi.
Mahmood then picked up a screwdriver and walked towards the other car - intending to damage the paintwork. But when the other driver confronted Mahmood the pair began to grapple in the street.
During the scuffle, Mahmood stabbed the man two or three times to the side of his torso. He was restrained and the police were called.
Mahmood initially said he was acting in self defence but later pleaded guilty to ABH and possesison of an offensive weapon. The court heard he has lost his taxi licence as a result of the incident.
Sentencing, Judge Richard Gioserano said: "In the normal course of events you have proved yourself to be a law abiding and hard working man yet here you are at 70 year of age fighting in the street.
"Those who escalate road rage incidents, in particular by producing a weapon, can normally expect to go to prison.
"We just cannot have drivers fighting in the street with weapons over who is going ro reverse. You can imagine the chaos that would ensue of people thought they could get away with that."
He said the incident was aggravated by the fact Mahmood's victim had a very young child in the car.
"Never mind how frightening it was for the other man. How about how frightening it was for the child," the judge said.
"I accept first of all he damaged your wingmirror. You should have stayed in your car and called the police. What you did was get out to take revenge.
"I accept you took the screwdriver only intending to damage the car, not to damage the man himself but once you did that, the risk did escalate by him trying to stop you.
"You are lucky he wasn't more seriously hurt. If he had been you would be going to prison. Others who take weapons to road rage incidents should think on that. They might not be quite so fortunate in the outcome."
A probation report said Mahmood was unfit for unpaid work but the judge said he was fit enough to be fighting in the street and would need to provide medical evidence to show he could not do unpaid work.
He sentenced the defendant, of Livingstone Road, Blackburn, to a two year community order with 30 days of rehabilitation activities and 60 hours unpaid work.
"You have now lost your taxi licence," he said. "That is good because someone of your temperament who is prone to losing his temper in the way I have seen shouldn't be a taxi driver."
