Man caught with over £2k of cannabis loses Glasgow private hire bid

Police Scotland objected to the licence application due to a conviction for possession with intent to supply.

A would-be private hire driver who was caught with over £2,000 worth of cannabis has been refused a licence to work in Glasgow.

The city’s licensing committee turned down Abdul Rahman Aslam’s application due to an objection from Police Scotland.

Councillors heard how the applicant had been convicted of possession with intent to supply cannabis in 2023.

His legal representative argued Mr Aslam had been “under a lot of pressure in his family life” at the time, as he was going through a separation and dealing with a gambling addiction.

But committee chairman Alex Wilson, SNP, said: “We are all under life pressures for whatever reason, but we all don’t turn to selling drugs.”

Police Scotland told councillors that officers had “noted a strong smell of cannabis” from Mr Aslam’s car in Stirling in July 2022.

A search of his vehicle found over 100 pouches of herbal cannabis as well as another three sealed bags, the committee heard. The street value “amounted to £2,370”.

Officers also discovered £1,078 in cash — which was later confiscated — and a phone.

Mr Aslam’s representative said her client had been “going through a separation” and “also had difficulties with gambling and debt”. “Much to his credit, he has managed to deal with those issues,” she added.

She told the committee that the applicant, currently a delivery driver, wanted to drive private hires as it would give him “the flexibility of being there for his young children” and supporting his ill mother.

However, the committee decided to refuse his application for a three-year private hire driver’s licence.
