National Taxi Association – Public Statement

7th November 2025

The National Taxi Association calls on HM Treasury to exempt licensed taxis from any pay per mile road fund system.

Taxis are not luxury vehicles; they are part of Britain’s public transport backbone. Every mile we drive is a mile serving passengers — hospital runs, school journeys, late night safety trips and transport in communities where buses and trains don’t reach.

A mileage tax on taxis is a tax on accessibility, fairness and livelihoods.

Drivers already pay through licensing, insurance, and compliance. Adding another levy would force up fares, punish passengers and undermine the very service people rely on.

We urge the Treasury to recognise taxis as essential public service vehicles and grant them full exemption. Britain needs taxis on the road, not priced off it.

The fact that a 3p a mile charge is going to be added for EVs is really not a good omen for petrol/diesel owners.

The fact that we have a Labour government is not a good omen for our country.
