How a single taxi driver brought Liverpool city centre to a standstill
A TAXI driver armed with a knife caused traffic chaos yesterday when he stopped his cab by the entrance to Birkenhead tunnel. The 32-year-old Walton man stopped his blue hackney cab by the roundabout at the Liverpool entrance to the tunnel and refused to move.
Police receivedreports from passers-by that the driver appeared upset and armed officers went to the scene. No one else was in the taxi. A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "When officers arrived on the scene, they saw a man who looked very distressed.
"Officers believed he was armed with a knife and were concerned for his welfare. "Two hours later, he was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon."
Trained police negotiators spent two hours talking to him through the windowwhile roads surrounding the area including William Brown Street and St John's Gardens were sealed off.
Just after 5pm, the man, dressed in a blue T-shirt, got out and was arrested. He was last night being questioned at a police station.
