Post subject:  dft Best Practice Guidance - Age Limits

I am curious about other members opinions on the DFT Guidance regarding Age Limits, our local Authority have recently reviewed our local Policy of Less than 3 years for 1st reg, off the road at 6 years, the less than 3 has been upped to less than 4 years with less than 60,000 on the clock, (up to 3 years no limit on the mileage)
This issue regarding Age limits has caused an up roar within the Trade since it was initially introduced 3 years ago, (we already have 2 yearly mot's) I'm wondering if up and down the country the Trade that have these age restrictions will quote "black and white" from the dft Guidance to their LA's or is the Trade happy with these conditions?????

I can see both sides of this issue, and I'm still not sure what's best.

Maybe if your manor has two tests a year, then it shouldn't really matter how old the vehicle is.

I think a council should request taxi/PH tests sheets, and if a vehicle has had bundles of failures before it eventually passes, then maybe they should have more frequent tests than those that sail through.

But a blanket age limit for vehicle makes as much sense as one for drivers. :?

As ive said all along, if these people want an age restriction then it should apply to to all vehicles that transport the public.
Busses being the main concern, they do more milage than taxis and its all stop start driving.
Perhaps councils should take the lead, but i doubt they will :?

Rubbish like this only generally applies to the taxi trade because the taxi trade is easy to control and we let them away with it.

Tell them to get lost. Vehicle quality is what is important, not age.

Same is true of drivers. The government's telling us that we baby boomers should expect to work on beyond the 65 retirement age our predecessors fought long and hard for.

But the same new labour controlled councils will attempt to get us off the road no matter whether we're fit to drive or not.

Vive la revolution!

From the point of view of the passenger:

No taxi/ph vehicle older than five years old on the road.

From the point of view of the vehicle owner:

With a buy back (for recycling) facility provided by the purpose built vehicle manufacturers.

From the point of view of the purpose built vehicle manufacturers:

A lead time of five years to set the vehicle recycling system up.
