Mayors are a total waste of money and time.

I sort of agree with Nigel in that for ceremonial events we already have umpteen other dignitaries that can cover them, i.e. Lord Lieutenants, Deputy Lord Lieutenants (loads of them in each area) and Sheriffs to name a few.

However I think a Mayor is needed to chair the council meetings.

The Civic duties are also enjoyed by most of the people in the Borough. They certainly complain if the Mayor isn't available. The Mayor also chairs the full council meetings. We do not spend very much money on our Mayor.
