Council limit on Hackney carriage drivers

HACKNEY carriage drivers in Harlow are to stay protected by a limit on the number of licences permitted in the town.

Harlow Council's environment and community committee could not agree whether to dispose of the current limit of 75, which protects the business of licensed cab drivers, and committee chairman Eleanor Macey used her casting vote to maintain the status quo.

Conservative councillor Tony Hall said: "I suggest we amend the recommendation so tthere is no limit on the number of Hackney Carriage licences - the council does not offer support like this to any other businesses and opening up the competition would improve service for the public."

advertisementBut Labour councillor Tony Durcan disagreed initially saying Mr Hall's amendment was a "stupid" idea, although he later exchanged the description for "silly".

He said: "We've agreed with the drivers involved to carry out a survey on the limit of licences in 2008 and the agreement has come with a recommendation from our officers. On the evidence we've got in front of us today the suggested amendment does not have any credibility at all."

When the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Consultative Body considered the matter last December it recommended the number of licences remain limited to 75.

The headline comes across as the council are limiting hackney carriage "drivers", which would be quite an achievement if they could pull it off? lol
