I have had a taxi in Brighton for over twenty years and I can assure you that a driver trying to take "advantage" of an un-metered out of town fare is not new. I know some of the old (white) faces in the trade (some now long gone..some still around) who would boast about doing this at Brighton Station.

I would also suspect that it is the same in every town. The trouble is that you and I get tarred with the same brush because of these people.

But dont forget... the driver is entitled to negotiate an out of town fare.. so in fact they are not doing wrong. However, on a busy Friday / Saturday night they want to make as much as possible and to tell the truth I am reluctant to go out of town (although I always will) as I can possibly make more around the town..without the risk of loosing big bucks on an out of town runner.

Yes of course we can negotiate a price for out of town work, but i do try to be fair. If it wasnt for the fact that it was two girls, it probably wouldnt hav stuck in my mind so much. Bearing in mind they've probably stood on the rank about an hour, are desperate to get home its not for us to take advantage of. You know in your 20 years of cabbing. that you dont have the same clout that you once had we are not trusted like we once were. It is this that has now made working in this town, just a way of making the money for the bills. I know if i had a cab on here (i rent mine) i'd be taking my carrier bag of cash and my memories to Spain like all the smart ones..taxipixie

If getting an out of town runner is your concern, why not try this,
neggotiate your out of town fare, then get it up front.

if they dont wanna play, they can travel with someone else.

it works a treat.

I think at night you are getting desperate drivers doing silly things. Alas because they get away with it they carry on.

I think we should class all our fellow drivers that take the mickey, as if they were drink driving.

All the times a blind eye is turned, it will only get worse.

Unfortunately although the idea looks ideal in reality it is not.. Last year ( I think) one driver did just that and at the end of the journey he was robbed. The money up front was a pretence.

But dont get me wrong. I do carry out out of town journeys at weekends if the customer looks ok. However, there is no way I would do it if there were three or four young lads... just not worth it. Which is a shame for the genuine ones. I think the answer is credit cards only.

Spoken like a true HC owner. :( :(

Perhaps he should come back with a black eye, or even a knife in his throat. :( :(
