No it's not it's only 20 packets. 2 people went abroad and bought me them back so that's 10 sticks each

The Goverment say there's a limit but as long as they are the same brand you can fill your boots.

They will do me until next year.

That was a very generous gift from them. If you paid for them it is illegal. They can't be sold. They are for personal use.

I gave them the money to get them for me, no profit was made so nothin illegal was done. 8)

I think customs would say otherwise.

Jesus where is this going??

If you holiday in any EU country each person can bring back 3200 ciggies each x 2 people = 6400 ciggies 32 cartons. They could have bought back as many as they wanted as long as they were for personal use.

Last year when I went abroad I bought 10,000 Bensons back and my missus bought 6kg of rolling tobacco through, yes we got pulled. All they asked was, is it for personal use? Of course I smoke Bensons and the missus smokes roll ups (she doesn't snoke) but that's what I told them.

When we got back round here the tobacco went like wildfire (paid for the holiday)

Come on Grandad get off the PC stage. If you went abroad in your car would you fill up in Luxembourg @ 70p per litre or wait until you got to Dover and pay £1.25 a litre?? You'd brim it at 70p per litre in Luxembourg and run round the UK on cheap fuel.

Bringing ciggies in is the same. 8)

Have to agree with you nidge but grandad is right. It has to be for personal use. Buying for someone else isn't personal use unless you are paying and it's a gift.

BTW the 3200 limit is a govt guideline. EU law says any amount provided it was bought within the EU and local taxes were paid.
Keep your receipt as proof of this.

Last time I was in Luxembourg, I bought 10,000 Regals and 10 Kg of rolling tobacco, 100 King Edward cigars and brought in the usual freebies (cheroots, fag papers, lighters etc) and had no trouble with customs.
Filled up with cheap diesel as well. :D

I wonder if the government realise that there is more duty free in this country, than normal ones sold genuinely,
I know smoking is bad for us, I have smoked since 12 years old, and would like to stop, but this job gets you down sometimes, but if they cut the duty they would make more money as folk would not then feed Europe's coffers
You can buy backy at around 3 e 50 c for 50 gram its sold over here in the shops for £12 or there abouts, 6 to 7 from the man in the pub

I'll keep paying £3.60 a packet as apposed to the £6.30 they sell them for in the shops.

I think you are being a tad selective with the law.
Firstly If anyone drives their own vehicle abroad and fills up with fuel, they are perfectly entitled to use that fuel in this country. If however they decided to syphon the fuel out of their tank and sell it to someone else, then that would be illegal.
With tobacco it is just the same. If you bring back 10,000 B&H and you smoke the lot yourself then you have done nothing wrong. As soon as you sell any of them you have broken the law.

Your interpretation of the law is correct.
The point being made is that the UK's draconian duty levels are what fuels this law breaking.
Also that lower duty levels would stifle this black market and ultimately increase the amount of revenue raised by the exchequer.

You assume that the duty on tobacco (and alcohol) is high to raise revenue. I think the duty levels are high to discourage people from smoking (and drinking) and thus lowering the burdon on the NHS.
Obviously this does encourage the illegal sale of tobacco (and alcohol) but that is down to peoples conscience and government enforcement.

Sorry, this is just propaganda.
If successive governments really gave a sh*t about health issues, duty would be at a level which really would deter people from buying or the product would be banned altogether.

£50 on a packet of fags would put people off buying and protect the public's health.
50p is just cashing in on the business with public health as an excuse.

Income received from the duty of ciggies is £9.3billion. Smoking related illness`s cost the NHS 1.5 billion. Not a bad profit there.

Alcohol duties received by the Government are £8billion a a year.

The cost of Policing towns and cities at weekends due to alcohol is £7billion.

The cost to the NHS to treat alcohol related injuries and illnesses are £2.7 billion.

There's a billion pounds and a bit more of a deficit on alcohol isn't there??

Alcohol is costing us more to treat than a person who smokes FACT!!!

Over to you.
