Cabbies' fear of working late

TAXI bosses are looking at putting CCTV cameras in cabs as a survey showed more than half of drivers don't feel safe working at night. And nearly one third of taxi passengers said they too felt unsafe at night, according to the Manchester study.

More than half of drivers say they would be willing to pay for security cameras - with most favouring advertising to subsidise the cost. Council licensing chairman Mike Carmody said the city was `researching' different ways of providing CCTV.

He said: "As well as ensuring the system works effectively, we also have to make sure it complies with data protection laws. "The safety of taxi drivers and passengers is of great importance to the city council.

"We are also looking into providing information at taxi ranks, telling customers what they should be paying, who they should complain to if they are not happy with the service and reminding them to treat taxi drivers with respect."

He said a report on CCTV options and ways of paying for the system would be put to the committee later this year. The survey - based on questionnaires sent to all 5,500 licensed taxi drivers and interviews with 571 members of the public - formed part of a major report into taxi demand and usage across the city.

It also revealed demand to increase the number of licensed black cabs in Manchester from the current 997. Despite safety fears more than 55pc rated their last taxi journey as 'good' or 'very good'.

Only 16pc of minicab drivers and 23 per cent of black cab drivers said they felt safe at work 'all the time'. Some 65pc of private-hire drivers said they felt safe `some of the time' - with 19 per cent saying they never felt secure.

Over half in both categories - 56pc of black cab drivers and 51pc who use minicabs - said they felt unsafe at night. Almost 90pc of passengers said they felt safe during the day, but 30.1pc said they felt unsafe using taxis at night.

Manchester don't want CCTV in cabs, this guy is definitely misleading people. The so called research he talks about stopped years ago.

No. The reason is customer privacy, before driver safety. Hence his stupid remark about data protection.
