If it does go to court... it will more than likely become a battle between LTI's solicitors and Allied...

Are LTI a party to this little skirmish?

So I take it Metrocabs are no longer manufactured.

Frazer-Nash group headquarters in Mytchett, Surrey, UK,
JD, Just to put Jimbo out of his misery, I have driven the new metro at the above address, whilst on my holiday last week.
The test drive was brill, I spent a whole hour going around there test track.
The engine was extremely quiet, (I would go to say quieter than a petrol one) at 30mph it runs on the battery after that the engine automatically cuts in to give you the extra power required.
If the battery's get below a certain charge the engine also cuts in to recharge them.
It comes with independent suspension and disc brakes all round
To drive it you turn the key select D and go, it is as responsive as any vehicle on the road put the foot down and it can reach 80mph rapidly.
There is also slightly more room in the rear as they have extended the interior so a wheelchair will go in without any problems

If however, the disabled group are saying that not ALL wheelchairs can fit into LTI vehicles & that by using the E7 & other Euro-cabs, more wheelchairs disabled people could use taxis, then they could well be on a winner.

A couple of weeks back I was curious as to the door widths on cabs with regards to wheelchair access, so I measured the usuable width on 4 cab types.

Of all the cabs the TX had the widest opening which really surprised me as I thought it would've been the euro.

TX 32 inches
Old style euro 29 inches
Metro 30 inches
Fairway 24 inches

I think the fact is that there is less room to manouvre a wheelchair into the correct position in a LTI vehicle, it's near on impossible in a 6 seater metro.

Having said that most euro drivers down here still don't bother, the customer just gets pushed in and the brake put on.

Don't I know it!!!

That's what I drive, & since I have been doing wheelchair jobs the proper way, I have to refuse all wheelchair jobs that have an escort, because while I can fit the wheelchair in, the escort has to ride on the roof, because there are no seats available once the wheelchair has been properly strapped in as per the book. I'm loosing a small fortune & let's face it, you never get runners in wheelchairs. So I miss the jobs, especially the regulars.

Very few drivers in Brum now do wheelchairs sideways & those that do are idiots. The cab trade got a nasty shock a year or two back. One of our owner/drivers was carrying a wheelchair sideways, no seatbelt nor wheelchair restraints, just the wheelchairs brakes, which if the wheelchair has not been maintained properly are usually useless. He was going around an island & was travelling too quickly. The lady in the wheelchair fell out of the wheelchair onto the floor of the cab & got stuck. Don't laugh it's not funny! It cost the driver £4,000 in damages which his insurance paid & he has been paying them back since in vastly increased premiums. He was & is a very experienced driver with a few decades service, but even he was lucky not to loose his Hackney driver's licence.

So, the motto is; If a wheelchair don't fit right in your cab & can't be properly anchored with the clamps & seatbelts provided then you don't take it.

Measured a Nissan Primastar Voyager today and the door gap was only 29 inches.

Whats the point of such a huge vehicle being a taxi if the door opening is so narrow for disabled access?
