Guess what?

In Birmingham, we've had VOSA random, on the spot inspections hanging over our heads for about a year now.

The policeman that is permanently attached to our licensing department is himself a trained VOSA inspector.

And we've had some fun with them.


we used to have the combined agency checks years ago..... but not now...... that is except when they're mounting the uninsured vehicle exercise....
the drivers would much rather have enforcement officers checking vehicles on ranks... if they tell you that your tyre is getting dodgy, then you change it there and then, and then meet up with them later on and show you have renewed your spare.... better than arguing with a copper.... and getting fined and points....

Excellent observation, so what's the job description of a man who drives a cab and how many company directors do you have driving for you?

Now let's see.. I know one company.... that owns all its own cars and employs its drivers..... so I would assume that they are employees.....

now let's see. I know a couple of people..... that own registered companies that are employed by those companies..... guess what as drivers...

Now let's see.. I know drivers that rent taxis..... who are classed as self-employed.

now you would probably be better to answer this one.. if you receive disability benefit and drive a Hackney on the weekends.... what do you class yourself as....

I would just like to say that I think a single tier system is best for the public. If a member of the public flags a private hire driver to take them somewhere and the driver is daft enough to do it then they are not insured hence putting the public safety at risk.

It would also save lots of tax payers money in overtime that the council wouldn't have to do to see who's pirating.

There are at least 55 so called hackneys on the private hire system I work and the only people who are benefiting from this are the greedy owners of the companys who don't care if you make a living or not so long as they get their settle.

I believe that new drivers should have to face tougher tests before they are allocated a badge or licence to be a taxi driver. I'm fed up of customers complaining that some of the drivers they have always use Tom Toms and do not always understand their English. This should be rectified and drivers who do not know where they are going should be properly educated before they are let loose on the unsuspecting public.

No one sytem will please everyone ...so the only group seeking reform should be the ones that Currently are underperforming....so why should it be changed to Drag up the Underperforming Minority when it already Probably works Just fine for the Overall Majority. And thats not what its Really About either, In fact its about those who are already Moderately to very successful wanting even an even bigger slice of the cake, Knowing full well that On average PH makes less money than HC does.

It is Infact only the HC that would want a one tier System, because they want everyone to be HC end of story...no space for any other type of thinking here. But hang on! Think again, thats Cutting off their own Noses in spite of their faces because if we were all HC they would have even more Direct competition by way 10s of thousands of PH turning HC in order to survive, thus Adding more HCs sitting in their already over crowded ranks.

now for the sake of a Minority of PH operators taking a few runs from them on a busy Night...it would open the flood gates to every PH turned HC Taking a Damn sight bigger chunk of their work off them. So wheres the benefit in trying to stop The PH taking say 5% of your Hailed runs when the Alternative is Making them go HC and Taking 50% of the Hailed runs off you. IMO the single tier system is in no ones favour when you sit back and look at the Bigger picture. in reflection the ones that should really be wary of Single tier is after all HC.

wrong...PH customers are still covered by the PH insurance if hailed...its just the Car that isnt covered.

And ive Yet to here one derogatory remark about drivers using Tom Toms...after all its better to be sure than to guess....its there for Back up as much as anything...even the police use them.

Besides Im sure a Properly licensed and Enforced PH is no more dangerous than an Equivelant HC. by far the bigger danger is the Member of the General Public who is the Owner of a car stopping and picking up while posing as PH or HC.

It would not be Rocket Science to have a nice Nationaly recognisable style Yellow roof top sign With "TAXI" emblazoned on it for all the UKs taxis and say a Nationally Recognisable Blue or Green roof top Sign With PRIVATE HIRE on it ..this would cure any doubt Immediately....and to get one of these two types of signs you would need A Current operators license and then sign Issued on laon from your local authority.

That would weed out the rogues in both PH and HC. and would cost mere Millions as against Billions...all of which comes out of HC and PC owners pockets.....It is Time to unite HC and PC in brotherhood and Stand as one rather than Make it a "one Size fits all" as usually one Size fits very few indeed...

well... Hackney's can already pick up off the road..... and the only people moaning that they want to do the same are private hire...... I have never heard of any hackney drivers wanting private hire to be allowed to pick up off the road... maybe it's different were you are.??

Im PH...but no way would I want to pick up off the road...I like the flexibilty of choosing my customers before the night starts. I could Turn HC using the vehicles I currently own...it wouldnt cost anymore for a HC license here than a PH. Its just ive no rank within 15 miles,...True I may well pick up an odd extra run if i was HC...but it doesnt appeall to me to do so. Unless the Law gives me no choice then I'l happily compete as an HC and take some of their work away in the nearest big town, id still have my regular clients so Im guessing id be more of a winner in this case. but..nah..I still like the steady pace of PH best.

We all do the same job it's just the method we receive work that is different hence different regulations. Single tier is a good idea it gives more choice you can do either regardless of what vehicle you have. If you just want to take bookings thats fine but if you want to pick up off the street fine. I've had things thrown at my vehicle because I won't stop to pick people up, they don't seem to realise or care why I can't stop. Having said that I probably wouldn't have stopped anyway, it was that time of night when I knew there would be fares waiting on the base which is manned and in my eyes safer for me to work from :)
