I was under the impression the consumer knows best. Then again if you don't consult the public your not likely to know what suits them best.

We know why councillors in the 19 or so restricted authorities that use the PCO conditions of fitness to restrict vehicle types have never asked the public what type of vehicle they prefer or if indeed they want restrictions on numbers to remain, is because councillors think they know best therefore there is no need to consult the public, how strange?

Quote:
councils are best placed to decide local issues is whats been argued.

I suppose in that sense you are saying "councillors know best", isn't that exactly what Sussex is saying?

I find it interesting how a council that has never asked the public what they prefer can be in the best position to decide what is best for those who it has never consulted? I also find the inference that councils are best placed to decide what is best for the public when one minute they have a policy of only allowing vehicles with a 25 foot turning circle to be licensed and the next minute they allow any vehicle to be licensed?

It would appear that any council who changed their policy from A to B must have concluded that policy A was not in the best interest of the public and therefore they obviously weren't best placed to decide in the first place, especially without consulting the public.

Regards

JD

But I have said within a previous post that the public should be consulted at least every three years .................... but this should be done for PUBLIC TRANSPORT generally and not just HC and PH.

No ....................... every PH firm in the country is allowed to call their business ******** TAXIS providing they have a single HC working on their system.

I believe this adds to public confusion.

I think nearly everyone on TDO will agree that it doesn't make any difference what you do in respect of the word "Taxi" because the public have already made up their mind and consider both "private hire" and "hackney carriages" to be "taxis".

Outlawing the name "Taxi" from private hire business advertising might make a lot of people in the hackney carriage trade happy but it won't alter the public's impression that private hire are also taxis.

JD

I don't think you regard the public to have a little thing called common sense ..................... the reason they think HC & PH vehicles are taxis is because no-one has told them CLEARLY any different.

I don't think that the majority of the public think that you can book a PH car to take you home.

The problem is that 99% of desk clerks up here answer the telephone "hello taxis" with the public saying "can I book a taxi" and the operator saying "yes what time".

The word taxi relates to a HC and NOT a PHV so why do PH operators, and why have they since 1976, been allowed to continue to use the word taxis in their trading name or promote their service as a taxi service.

I just think that a clear differance between the two codes could mean more work for everyone ................. particularly on a weekend night when the PH boys are out flimping ...................... have you ever wondered why they flimp ?

Leading to public awareness NOT public confusion.

I very much doubt there are more than a handful of the public who have ever read any taxi/PH act.

The thing is Sussex .............. and we've said this before .............. just because you have a problem doesn't mean the rest of the country has a problem.

I don't have a problem, it's councils led by dumb a*se LOs, feeding dumb a*se councillors a diet of stupidity that have the problems.

The public don't care, and they never will.

Are you for real ................... what has reading an act of parliament got to do with the public believing that there is no differance between HC and PH.

Are you really suggesting that the only people who do know the differance have read the Act.

I think you should have a quiet word with yourself.

I said that the public were confused

WITH THE IMPLIMENTATION OF THE LEGISLATION

NOT

THE LEGISLATION ITSELF.

FFS are you losing the plot as well as this debate.

Well that's for others to decide for themselves.

But right at the start of this thread you said the IoL proposals were a 'crock of [edited by admin]', and since then you have been putting forward many of the items in their proposals.

Nuff said.

What I'm "suggesting" is clear definition between HC and PH.

If you want to suggest that because they are proposing similar things but IN A SINGLE TIER OF LICENCE, and that that amounts to the same thing then you are deranged.

The crock of $hit that the IOL propose is because it is all based upon a single tier of licensing ................. I'm interested to hear from anyone who can convince me that a single tier of licening will work accross the whole country.

A single Tier cannot have Two levels....Best let us 10s of thousand of PH go HC and we can compete with the HC Boys and Girls in there already over crowded ranks....that will really please everyone concerned

Or alternatively all the HC lads could leave their overcrowded ranks and flood the offices.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

The problem comes when the mans opinion is circulated as being the opinion of this website.

NOT IN MY NAME.
