He says he's only doing the job part time to help him pay his bills.

Hardly professional.

What about the blokes who are professional and do the job full time.

Make a few extra quid ........................... when the rest of the trade are struggling to make a couple of quid to start with.

Dereg utopia ................. professional HC & PH driver HELL.

True.....if all drivers switch off it will leave the operator in the sh*t......but how many in this trade would risk there wages for that? And you still have to earn a living for your family the next day and the day after.

As well as the punters being dropped in it as well ............. which as you say threatens the takings for the future.

GA.. I get the strong feeling that somebody wants a new Taxi Act.. so they can stay working in the past.. and without any controls... in reality....

I only posted that post as a curiosity.... but from now on it would seem we will have to have permission as to the context of what we post....

TDO.... is now becoming JD's points of view... or nothing..... so I'll see you some time maybe later in the year in Gateshead....

Are you suggesting that it is only in the North East that PH operators have this level of control of the activities of the drivers.

Possibly, as in most other areas/firms that have conditions for drivers, such as you mentioned, usually mean the drivers are earning bundles.

Else they wouldn't put up with it.

What would say to a carpenter who's boss treated him badly? Or a plumber? Or even a road sweeper?

You would say go get another job.

In Brum PH drivers can do the rounds of PH operators all year long if they have a mind to & pay zilch rent (settle) all year.

The way it works is that, except for the top few PH operators, most of the other PH operators offer incentives of one month's free rent to join them.

So you have your free month's rent & move on to the next PH operation. And there are PH drivers out there that do it most of the year long, because they know that the PH offices have little work & it's the same story at most of the small/medium operators; "we've got no work for you, go & find your own, we'll cover you!"

But conversely, the top PH operators, & there is only a handful of them, won't stand their drivers even mousing one job off the streets. If it is proved that one of their drivers has picked up illegally off the street, or the PHV is regularly unavailable when he should be assisting work, they sack the driver instantly.

Join the GMB or whatever because the chances are they are employed and have better rights than the self employed?

The chances are that a driver, be they HC or PH would have entered into a Hire Purchase agreement to buy the vehicle they use.

Many of the vehicles used, if not all, are resonably large saloons or estates which are viable only because they are "working vehicles".

Then you have the PH operators who get a driver to buy the car off them, signing agreements that the car is some kind of lease purchase with it only becoming the property of the driver after the final and baloon payment.

Then you can say "go get another job" ................... but can you say that to a bloke who's driven taxis for 10+ years who although is very proficiant is possibly not capable of doing very much else. More so, do you do away with their experience in order to allow an unlimited number of new bods in who just want to drive taxis to "top up" their other income.

This is now getting stupid .................... and maybe you'll allow me the opportunity to say to both you and JD ( ) and everyone else who wants the whole HC and PH world to change to suit them -

IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN YOU GO AND DO SOMETHING ELSE

NO-ONE FORCED YOU INTO THE TRADE AND YOU KNEW THE CRACK WHEN YOU JOINED.

After all is that not what your suggesting others who don't like it do.

I'm saying if you can't earn a living out of the trade then stop f***ing moaning and leave.

I'm also saying if drivers dislike their working conditions, on certain operators, then stop f***ing moaning and find another.

If firms are saying you should supply a nice uniform/car/service, then usually they are the firms drivers can earn money from. If not stop f***ing moaning and leave.

I'm also saying that people who moan and this that and the other are the ones killing the trade, in their areas, as if I was a punter I would rather walk that get in a car with them.

All I'm saying Sussex my auld fruit, is that people should make themselves aware of the fundemental aspects of the trade before they joined and made a decision as to what licence to obtain.

People should do exactly what you have done instead of calling for things to be given to them as some kind of right.

It also needs people to be more honest to new entrants.

A significant amount of people coming into this trade have failed at something else, so my sympathy for people who haven't checked the full inns and outs is none.

As for the uniform issue, claim it back on tax. Of course that's if they declare their earnings.

Do you include the full ins and outs to cover plate types and the operational differences between them.

Is it not then fair to assume that you made a choice to go down the PH route rather than the HC route and is it not then fair for people who chose to invest more to have little sympathy for your quest to get for nothing what they worked hard and paid for.

Surely you researched the industry before making the decisions you have made.

Shame you now want the world to change because you made the wrong decision.
