I heard about this at lunch time today & have posted this story so that it can be monitored & updated by anyone who may have further information in the coming days.

It is alleged that the passenger got out of a Eurocab with sliding doors & that the driver of the car that hit him was not aware that the cab doors had opened.

However, the report does not go into details about this, so it is not clear whether this was the case.

Obviously most other vehicle doors open out & passing vehicles can easily see that passengers may be about to alight from the vehicle.

I also know the area reasonably well. It is out in the sticks & at night it is pitch-black, so that may have been a contributory factor.

And the "doors opening" signs which have to be on these vehicles to comply with the licensing laws are totally inadequate.

And the last thing drivers in other cars are doing is looking at the back window of a cab to see them anyway.

There is something to be said about getting out on the right side of the road. Perhaps this accident might not have happened if the gentleman had got out on the pavement side of the road?

The "Doors Opening" signs are not fitted to all of the Eurocab Hackneys in Brum.

It depends on which manufacturer the vehicle has come from; some fit them, some don't & with some it is an option that you have to ask for.

But I do know that there are many Eurocab style Hackneys in Brum that do not have them on.

I wonder if the new PCO approved Merc has them on?

But what a good point. Obviously your council insist on them.

We've only had these abortions since late 2004 and it was part of the licensing policy that they had to have it, I believe.

Could it be possible that the gentleman got out of the cab on the pavement side of the road and was knocked down while he was crossing the road?

For many, many years now, I have thought that all cab manufacturers should have systems in place whereby a cabbie can lock either rear passenger door when pulling up to let passengers out.

That way, it would not matter if the cab pulled up on the left or across the road on the right; the cab driver could always lock the offside door preventing passengers getting out into the middle of the road.

In fact, I am surprised that the PCO have not added this requirement to their CoF.

From experience, IF", a person gets out on the roadside they are just as likely to get knocked down whether or not the doors slide, or open outwards.

If the passenger doesn't get knocked down, then the chances are that the door will get taken off by a passing vehicle.

On my new E7 if I have my indicator on as I pull up then only the door on the same side as my indication will open, this obviously stops people getting out into traffic.

I drive a tx1 and i keep my foot on the brake and keep doors locked until the road behind is clear.Thats the trouble with sliding doors passengers diving straight out onto the road.I've nearly lost a tx1 door a few times,better losing a door though than a person.

My scotcab has sliding doors and i tell customers to get out kerb side! But can see why accident and near misses happen!

People need to take a certain amount of responsibility for their own safety. We are not their mothers.
