Yes.

I wouldn't!!

I'd make it a five year knowledge test, or at least as long as it took to learn every nook & cranny in the LA.

There is little or no respect for the job from most of the entrants into the trade now & most are shameless too.

There is a predisposition from most of those coming into the trade that all they have to do is be a competent driver. As for being able to take the passenger to their destination, 'without prolonging the journey', they just think they will get by using 'the power of the wind'.

And that is just not good enough!!

Yes.

Well then sign someone or some union/association, from the MoM, up and get it discussed at a higher level.

Would you advocate this for existing drivers as well or will they as usual be exempt?

The problem with existing drivers who have already been licensed by an LA, is that in doing so the LA has deemed them 'fit & proper' to be licensed, & I suppose that also means that they are competent to be drivers & know their way around the LA in which they are licensed.

There are two options that councils can take;

1) A council policy that whenever there is a complaint about a driver for overcharging that is substantiated, that driver should sit a knowledge test, to prove that he is competent in his/her knowledge of the LA's area.

2) A council policy of further improvement or training for existing drivers, which would include a knowledge test. Any driver 'worth his salt' would have nothing to fear.

It's been over two weeks now since last gathering of the MoM mob.

I'm now wondering which members of the gang have consulted with their own members (taxi and private hire drivers) over the issues that are being debated?

I'm reliably informed that the GMB have discussed the MoM at all levels, and as JD has praised them for supplying the minutes, then who can argue with that? :D

I have no doubt that the Sefton Hackney Carriage trade have also been fully briefed by their rep. :D

Maybe the Captain can confirm that the NTA membership is fully up-to-date with the goings on.

The reps from the NTTG will no doubt have consulted their membership, if of course they have a clue as to who they exactly are.

The T&G, or whatever they are called now, will eventually get around to consulting their membership, even if it is about six months after everything been done and dusted. :D

Which brings me to the NPHA and NALEO.

Now I know several members of both associations, and as far as I can work out nothing in the way of consultation has passed their desks. It would appear the mushroom scenario works well for them both.

New evidence has determined that this was not the Scottish delegation.
Due to the lack of hubcaps we can only surmise it is in fact the Liverpool contingent.

The Scottish delegation are pictured here, having taken a wrong turn at Carlisle. They got directions from this character:

It can't be the Liverpool lads... they haven't got the E7 yet.
