You all seem to be missing a fundamental point about The Knowledge.

The Knowledge = commitment.

..and you can switch The knowledge off!

Just another placed letter from Addison lee.
Now Steve Wright is on the Taxi board expect more of the same.
Addison Lee monitor all taxi based forums and web sites and Papers. They have a program running 24/7 similar to a Google bot, we pick it up all the time on our blog.
Get set for a barrage of letters and comments to on line news sites from the mini scabs.
The war on London Taxi drivers Has begun.

I can assure you that no one London cabby is more, or has more, commitment to the trade than me, or several hundred drivers that I know.

There's no need to be like that Captain!!!!!!! =;
In London we have suffered time and time again by the in-action of the people we pay to look after our trade.
This time will be no deferent.
On our web blog ( the anderson shelter)we have predicted that London Taxis will be enveloped by the year 2012 and there will be a one tier system as our leaders seem strangely impotent in protecting out interests
This may or may not be a good thing if handled right,
i.e. all the drivers put through the knowledge, and a limit set in the number of drivers issued with licenses.
It is my democratic right to protest about what is happening to our trade, whether other drivers think I am being self opinionated or just making up conspiracy theories, It will not stop me from trying to protect the job that I love.
My self and other drivers from the Royal Oak shelter will never give in to the onslaught from the Private hire sector. We will not lay down and be trodden on. Let them do the Knowledge if they want to do the job.

If you think this nutter is pukka. try to contact him, you will find he doesn't exist.

Defo wont happen Mr LJ.

Rest assured the black cab trade wont allow an easing of the KoL, and the PH operators wont allow their drivers to have the freedom of not paying them money. :-$

I wish the London Taxi trade was as confident as you. A voice in my head tells me your right, but my heart has that sinking feeling.
If we do survive it will be because the trade fights back.

I know my views are some what controversial and the only reason I keep on spouting out this scenario is, I want our trade to survive.
It took me three years to get my bill and it took Ken Livingston two minutes to give it away.

Nanda Menon, ( you were probably being sarcastic and I do apologise if it went over my head)

Yes, it still has its problems but it's vastly improved. In another 4 years who knows how good it will be. It might even be designed with the London Knowledge in mind. It's only about imputing information after all.

The great Luddite Challenge - my money is on the technology .....

Yes you could be right, but GPS systems have a long way to go before they can match up with the knowledge of a good taxi driver. They are a fine tool if you don't have a clue where you are going or are not working on a meter. But the routs they take are appalling and sometimes highly dangerous, as we have seen in the Gibralta incident.
But I do think they will get there eventually, around about the time we see the first driverless cabs hitting the streets!

Today I was suck behind a car at Hyde Park Corner whose driver was programming their sat-nav.
Given that in many of London's streets the majority of vehicles are taxis,do we really want taxi drivers to be just someone who can drive and follow a sat-nav?
In my experience, passengers talk to me as if I'm a local,be it in Fulham,The City or anywhere else. That is what the public want.
Not a 'computer says no' zombie.

Of couse sat-nav will become a tool of the trade just as an atlas or an A-Z.
But it cannot replace local knowledge,it's just another tool.

Sat-nav will eventually replace the local knowledge. It's just not programmed to do so at the present time. We are not talking about "if" it happens, we are talking about "when" ... it's just a matter of time . . . .
