I was listening to Boris Johnson our Mayor and Chair of transport for London on the Vanessa Feltz show last week and I was pleased to hear Boris confirm that the mid year inspection is to be abolished, I quote

"the six monthly test is dead, it's as dead as a dodo...."

well that could not have been put in more plain English.

Rejoice I ask you all for here we have a Mayor who listened to our concerns and acted as quickly as the law would allow.

I also noted a really nice air of confidence in Boris he was certainly displaying the qualities that we here in London need.

I liked the way he defended the good work people within the City of London do because not all are greedy and let's be brutally honest we have done pretty well earning a good living off all parts of the financial services industry !

So I would like to personally thank you Boris for meeting your commitment to the London taxi trade.

Are the people who do the inspections rejoicing? They have just had their income cut in half at a stroke just when times are getting hard. What is good for one group may be bad for another.

we have nothing to hide.........the 6 monthly was introduced about 2 years ago under the last mayor as part of the change over to SGS from the PCO for our overhauls. Prior to that we only had 1 inspection a year and safety standards were as high then as they are now under twice yearly inspections.

Grandad, as i understand it, if the 6 monthly is abolished then it will only be replaced with increased spot checks at stations, feeder park etc or the occasional home visit which will no doubt help replenish the coffers of those you feel may be losing out; incidentally it won't half their losses as they were getting paid £38 (approx) for the mid-year inspection whereas now if the cab fails it's first inspection the owner will have to pay for any additional inspections as well as any further inspections brought about from the spot checks.

I personally would have preferred to have the mid year abolished and a return to the annual inspection with no additional spot checks, one could find himself having a spot check twice in a month and being failed both times on minor issues which would then mean more time off the road as well as a lot more expense. An exagerated example perhaps but not beyond the remit of the PCO/SGS.

Yo Nidge.

As a responsible owner driver I have nothing to fear, because as you know I keep my cab in an immaculate condition, anything goes wrong it's fixed asap.

That would be true for the majority of owner drivers, but, sadly, many shed rental folks will take full advantage of this by having their ancient cabs even less maintained than they do at present, and that's scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I work nights, and I can't remember the last time I had the taxi looked at by anyone from the PCO, so I await these new improved on street inspections with interest.

Time will tell if the standards fall or improve.

Scrap all inspections make everything 'on the spot', if the cab fails, its sent to a breakers yard and / or put in a crusher. Alternatively, shoot the driver through the knee cap for a first offence, second offence through the head.

Now that would bring up standards

This is true, but then we would have a shortage of drivers and there would be more calls to water down the Knowledge and increase the shipments of Polish drivers into London.

Next thing you know, all standards will be gone and we'll all be driving Skoda's.
