not sure, letter says that from october 1st.by law the PCO have to give the tax man names and addresses ,and expiry dates of licences of every licenced taxi and private hire driver in London.Something to do with combating fraud and benefit cheats.
why they need to give my name to the taxman is unclear.
I have been driving a cab for 24 years and every year he gets his whack from me.
However what is strange is the letter states "names and addresses of every licenced taxi driver, private hire driver and every other member of TFL staff".
Presumably,Boris, and the twitcher will have there names and address given as well.

Don't worry about it, the government is almost skint and they want a sub from all the tax dodgers.
Now the good thing about this is the dodgy PH will feck off sharpish, and all those that have the Ferrari's and bentleys licenced so that they can escape the congestion charge will also have to cough up, how are they going to explain that they have not earned a crust from not doing PH, when they are licenced

http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/reports/ag ... 250908.pdf

As you can see they did this in Dundee as well

In that case I very much doubt you are on top of the hit list.

But the ones who are are the ones that are not only paying no tax, but claiming benefits they are not entitled to.

IMO the courts are going to be kept well busy. =D>

I hope it catches on nationwide and just see how many suddenly disappear or sign off the dole

You all appear to misunderstand the meaning of this letter.
What it means is that our names, addresses, dates of birth and NHS numbers will be put on a disk which will be lost, stolen or sold on eBay.

This letter is to warn all Taxi and PH drivers about the possibility of identity theft.

I suspect, as Sussex says (was that a pun? :D ) this is aimed at the many part time cab men who have main jobs but 'forget' to mention they're also driving cabs to double their income, or those who are simply chancers of the first kind.

I've always used a good accountant, and of course should I ever be investigated (not that they'll find any irregularities) the LTDA have a specialist tax investigation service with expert staff and accountants to help you . . . members only of course.

No,
its actually aimed at private hire drivers who have not registered with HMRC and are not paying tax. The letter should have gone out to just them.
For many years now as Licensed Taxi drivers pass out their details were always past to the Tax man, part time or full time. But when the carriage Office started Licensing private hire, for reasons known only to themselves PHV drivers details were not passed on.
Its just like the last letter sent out to inform about touting, as John Thomas LTDA chairman said, in the latest issue of Taxi mag, " It seems every time a decision is made about one or the other the cry from the PCO goes up, we have to treat them all the same" Why.

I have noticed recently something has starting to happen in the trade. After years of pulling apart, the opinions voiced in the trade press seem to be coming from the same direction. It may just be coincidence but it is refreshing to see the trade leaders singing to the same tune and waving the same flag.
Could this be the start of the unity we have been calling for, for many years now?
I see that the LTDA have, for some time now, thrown open its doors at Taxi House to ALL DRIVERS, to use the facilities, take receipt pads lanyards and no smoking signs.
This is very promising and so much better than the petty "sorry your not a member mate".
It should bring them many more members by being this open. More drivers would join a union or association if they were not at each others throats all the time.
I have always hoped that the trade will one day come together and fire the same gun.
This is a step forward, one to be applauded. All we have to do now is get Bob involved.

Johns article this week is his finest work and I would like to quote a piece that I feel deserves repeating.

"I now firmly believe that it would suit some parties if Taxis and minicabs were lumped together into one mass, no knowledge of London,no standards and no pride in being part of the finest taxi trade the world has seen- the Gold Standard as our ex mayor called us.
it is now time for the two branches, vastly different in terms of standards, reputation and quality, to be separated from the one licensing authority and be licensed by separate regimes."
Well said John, here here.

I suspect those details are already on 100s if not 1000s of discs already.

One more ain't going to really make things worse.

Your surely not saying everyone of the 25,000 black cab drivers is 100% up to date with his tax obligations?

So every licensed Taxi driver in London pays their taxes? :D

Get real Mr A, I can almost accept your derogatory remarks about the LTDA in one post, then praising them in the next, but if you think every Taxi driver in London pays their dues . . . you're living in cloud cuckoo land.

I for one know a Postman who rents from my garage and tells the HMRC he has his badge but doesn’t use it, it's folks like him that need sorted out, why should I pay for his beer money?
Guys like him exsist in their thousands whether they are pushing a Taxi or a Minicab.

The letter is aimed all Taxi and Minicab drivers, otherwise it wouldn’t have been sent.

I have 2 mates, both who have emigrated to oz, who religously return every early November, rent a cab (cash only!) and "cane" it for 6 weeks, then return with their pockets & wallets bulging...all without Mr Tax man knowing :?

They both have their personal details registered at relative's addresse's in blighty with regard to the PCO. & renewing their bill's every 3 yrs.

How this will affect them? i'm not sure? as long as they pay cash to the cab garage and he doesn't "put then fru the books" not alot?
