WAV's are for the purpose of disabled wheelchair users only, children & babies should not be carried in a pram or pushchair.
I have had numerous arguments with passengers wanting to put the pushchair in the back with child strapped in.
Due to other drivers being too lazy to get out of the cab and help fold the buggy's down and put them in the front.
I approached the local authority and a police officer and was informed that only transportable wheelchairs should be carried with passengers in them.
Taxi's do not have to provide booster seats etc they are exempt from this law.
And whilst on the subject of seat belts, you do not have to wear a seat belt in the rear of a taxi with a PARTITION although I would always advise all passengers to wear them.

Yeah right!!

Probably half my work is mothers with prams, prams stay up, that's why they chose a hack (WAV) over a PH because they don't want to be p!!ssing abut putting the pram down, it has nothing to with drivers being lazy, it's a convenience thing from both sides, driver and punter.

a lot of Prams/Pushchairs Split the Cradle part from the Wheels for transportation purposes....the Cradle part with Baby in can be normally strapped in place by a seat belt...not always easy but if mums with it she can ensure its reasonably safe....unless Mums out the Boozer and is more incapable of walking than baby is...such is our Modern world.

getting half-pint terrors to PUT a seatbelt on then KEEP it on seems like a life-long job sometimes, my kids were always strapped in even before it became the law, but every day i see "adults" driving and kids swarming loose in cars and even infants on mums lap in the front passenger seat, but i bet she "loves her baby" if asked....so sit in the back and get belts on em all then

Might be convenience for driver and punter, but still doesn't make it legal. I hope you don't have an accident or you could find yourself in serious trouble.

Why aren't adult seat belts OK for older children?
Adult seat belts are best for people with an adult bone structure. Children need to use child seats and boosters to be safe - they put them in the right position to use the seat belt properly.
The lap belt of an adult seat belt needs to go as low as possible over the stomach. A child needs to be boosted up so the adult belt fits properly.
If not, the adult belt sits too high over the stomach and in a crash there is a risk of damage to internal organs as well as sliding under the belt.

What about travelling in taxis?
Taxis cannot be expected to have the right child seat or booster unless parents have brought one with them.

If child seats or boosters are not available in a taxi:

Quote:
under 3s must travel unrestrained in the rear only
;
those 3 years and above must use an adult belt in the rear seat only.
child up to 135 cms in a front seat of any vehicle must use the correct child seat or booster.
What if someone has to give a child a lift at short notice and does not have the right child seat?

If there is an "unexpected necessity" there is an exemption for a child of 3 years or more to wear an adult belt on a short journey in a car or light goods vehicle when no appropriate child seat is available. The exemption is not intended to cover regular school runs or other journeys.
Children under 3 years must always have a child seat. The only exception is travel in the rear of taxis and a child seat is not available.

I think the quote about under 3s traveling unrestrained is the reason the traffic cop stated that they are better strapped in there buggy's, most wavs have a centre seat belt for the rear facing passengers or for the wheelchair this could be placed around the buggy

so far this week I've done 17 trips with push chairs one thing I do though is put a seat belt around the pushchair (facing backwards)

They can if they are available.

They're not though, my last TX1 'R621' never had them fitted, neither did the Fairway before that.

My current shiney TX2 example (pictured) does.

I've always carried buggies, they make up quite a considerable proportion of jobs around the Hampstead area.

I think the guys who strap buggies in have got to weigh up how much they value their own families income along with their licenses /jobs.

Make no mistake if their is an accident someone somewhere will want to apportion the blame - and guess where it will stop

I worked in Newport for some years and you would have young mothers wanting to bring two buggies in along with a pile of shopping bags, as far as I am concerned it is a big safety issue and the answer is NO.

I reluctantly allow mother/father with a baby - NO! the child is not staying in the pushchair/buggy, but I will reluctantly allow them to hold them on their lap provided that the parent is belted in. Remember you have a WAV and as such it has been tested for that - the weight in a pram/pushchair is entirely different and should not be confused.

If there was any credible Union/Association out there then this problem would have been ironed out a long time ago, unfortunately there is not so if in doubt - then dont - a poxy £3/£4/£10 fare could cost you your livelihood.
