Blackburn private hire driver glassed by drunken gang




A TAXI driver needed stitches after a gang of drunken men smashed glass in his face.

Rashad Mahmood, 27, of Accrington Road, Blackburn, went to pick up a fare at John’s Snooker and Pool Bar, Clayton Street, Blackburn, at 4.40am on Friday when he was confronted by three young men who were holding beer glasses and bottles in the street.

Mr Mahmood, who works for Intack Private Hire, said: “I asked them to finish their drinks and put the glasses down because they are not allowed in the taxi with them.

“At this point they started swearing at me and then they threw a beer glass at my window, which smashed it.

“I got out to confront them and they threw a bottle in my face.”

Mr Rashid was taken by ambulance to the Royal Blackburn Hospital were he received stitches for a deep cut in the middle of his forehead and at the top of his nose.

He also has minor cuts to his neck and ears where the glass shattered.

He has not been back to work since the attack and does not know when he will be well enough to return.

He added: “It is not the first time this has happened to me and it’s worrying.

“It’s making me think about my future as a taxi driver.”

Police are investigating the incident. The attackers were described as Asian.
