Mature Wrexham student punched taxi driver in fare row

A MATURE Wrexham student punched a taxi driver in the face after a disagreement about how much a fare would cost.

Julian David Ferrari, 39, of Chester Road, Wrexham, got a taxi with friends from Hightown Barracks to go to Chester Road, Wrexham, and then on to Ruabon.

Joan Morris, prosecuting, at Wrexham Magistrates' Court, said: "In the early hours of December 14, Ferrari attended for a taxi from Gold Star.

"There was a disagreement about how much the fare would be.

"Ferrari said he was going to 'leather him' if it was a higher price."

The court heard that the taxi driver Kunigal Gul Mohammed Hussain pulled over on Chester Road by the Garden Village shops.

"The defendant struck him with force to the left side of his face and his left cheek was swollen and painful," Miss Morris said.

"Hussain pressed the emergency button in the car and when police arrived, Hussain indicated the defendant was responsible for the attack."

Miss Morris added: "Ferrari said he was annoyed because he felt the fare quoted was unreasonable."

Justine McVitie, defending, said: "He accepts he punched him once and he's thoroughly ashamed.

"He can't explain why he behaved in this manner."

Miss McVitie said that Ferrari was a trained electrician, but is now in his third year of university studying sports science and is hoping to become a teacher.

Magistrates chairman Elizabeth Crumplin ordered Ferrari to pay a fine of £165, court costs of £60 and a victim surcharge of £15.

He was also told to pay £75 compensation to Mr Hussain.
