No, PH plates are not limited and are available from the council for the usual fee ( around 2 or 3 hundred quid a year, depending on your council)

That's not too bad then, just wondering as when it comes to getting plates sorted out etc mine will be funded by a company I am under (Work Directions) not with them by choice though was referred to them in August when I had a motorcycle accident they reckoned I needed to start looking for work immediately despite my right arm being shattered and awaiting an op!

Right, let's try and pad this out a bit:

Do not commit yourself to any more than the cost of getting your badge from the council; ie, Admin charge, medical, CRB. The paper work from the council will give you the detail. Unfortunately, the Nottingham website is difficult to navigate at this end of a beer or two!!!

Hackney Carriages (HC) may be 'London-style' or Wheelchair accessible only in your area. On the other hand, they may not be. Private Hire Vehicles (PHV) will include standard saloon cars, Mondeo, Vectra, Peugeot, etc.

3 ways to run a car:

1) Ownership: Your car, your insurance, your maintenance.

2)'lease' or 'rent' or any other term you may hear: You pay a set amount each day/week for the use of the car. You, probably, put the fuel in. Someone else (the owner??) pays for maintenance, insurance.

3)Commissioned driver: You drive the car and take a percentage of the take, 40% here, varies substantially throughout the country. No other commitment, walk away at the end of the shift.

The options are various. Go for the simple, easy-to-get-out-of way in your area, just in case you don't get on with it. It took me a few years, progressing up the ladder, bit-by-bit, before I had my own car on the deal that suits in this area.

Don't rush, you will enjoy it.

Ask away if I've missed anything.....

That's probably the most useful bit of information I've had so far thanks Cabbyman.

One thing I have to ask though by comissioned driver would that be for the taxi firm or another driver?

Ideally what I would like to do is a part ownership type thing where the cost is shared by 2 drivers to make it a bit cheaper.

I do like to talk to people which we didn't really have time for on 999 calls.

That will last about five minutes, from then on you happy to get rid of them.

I've been saying for years that's the way forward, but I guess less than 1-2% of cars are run that way. [-(

IMHO, the ultimate aim would be to own the company and all the cars!!!!

I don't, I'm happy with the easy life.

There are so many ways of doing it, in so many different areas; You must do your own research in your area. Talk to local drivers and local companies. It's easy enough to ask questions providing you don't say 'yes' to their closing question before you're ready.

It's a great, fun business to be in; It won't suit everybody; Some aren't prepared to put the time in that will make a viable business of it....That's their decision.

I love it; You will get out of it what you put into it, starting with how much local research you can do and then analyse of your own volition.

We can't tell you how your local company operates....You must ask them....

Keep coming back and asking questions; I, for one, will attempt to answer them as honestly and diplomatically as I can. Good luck.

As the saying goes.... A partnership is the only Ship that doesn't float....

Don't know how I'm going to go about it but I am definitely going to do taxi driving for a while, the company who I am under has said a definite yes to getting me my plates sorted so whether I go for my own car or lease I'll have my own plates to fall back on in the event of a partnership going tits up.

Opinions please on the Skoda Octavia 1.9 SDi, VW Passat 2.0 TD, Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D (what does D4D actually stand for???) and also the Pug 306 1.9 HDi estate...

These are being thought of for a personal car so not spending the money before I have got it lol!

This next bit is totally off topic I know but has anyone noticed that Kate Bush is fit!

A lot of people seem to like the Octavia and I wouldn't recommend the 306 as a taxi go up one to 407 but they are expensive to repair if something goes wrong. I haven't had a problem with mine as yet but apparently I am the only one who hasn't, lol. That might be down to the lack of milage on it though :D

Hi mate, thought I'd post in your thead too! The vast majority of cars I see in Bolton are Avensis'. They must be reliable or something!

If I'm getting my own I wouldn't mind a Honda Accord, reliable as anything!

Nah I wouldnt go with an Accord TBH, they seem to noisy in the cab.

As for the 306 I had a prang in June (not my fault!) and they sent me a 307 1.6 HDi90 S...Even though it was only the hatchback there was bags of room and it had plenty of grunt to say that the engine took up less room under the bonnet than a lawnmower engine, very quiet too...

The only way I can explain the ride is how a baby would feel in the womb, lovely and cushy with a safety cell around it to keep it warm and safe!
