My plates on a PHV have expired and I am not seeking a renewal for this vehicle (it will not be used for PH work anymore). The council have said there is a fine for not returning them and also a charge for the plates and brackets. My PHV licence conditions do not mention any return of plates unless licence is suspended or revoked. An additional form states that "Hackney Carriage" plates must be returned but they are not HC just PHV.

Views anyone?

Why not just return them? They are of no further use to you and the council can recycle them.

true story from about five years ago.

A Lincoln PH driver got a proper job.

The LO wrote to him asking him to return plate (which bears the legend, property of City council)

Letter ignored.

7 days notice also ignored.

prosecuted.

summons ignored.

Fined £1,000. in his absence, plus costs.

return the plate?

Have a think about it.

Sorry forgot to add that plates were slightly damaged (after 12 months on front, stone chips etc and water damage to rear plate due to car wash etc) so I chucked them in the bin, it was a council bin so does that count as returning them :lol:

We get charged £26 for the non return of relenquished plates...though in reality ive had plates Ive thrown away after they became uneeded and never heard any more about it. Id say sit tight..if they want them they'll get in touch, then explain the problem...and if they dont ask...good

Strange....we pay £25 deposit for the plate and when we hand it back in get £25 back.....rocket science obviously.
