Satnavs work well in the countryside. In large towns they can be a nightmare. They don't know local traffic conditions, temp road closures etc.

Satnav's can't tell the driver to use a bus lane & also can't suggest an alternative route if stuck in traffic, a taxi driver who is good at his or her job will use alternative routes at different times through their working day, this allows the good cabbie to cut down the cost of sitting in traffic and have the customer at their destination quicker and cheaper than a satnav can.

They shouldn't need to.

But they are a god send for out of town work, and for giving quotes.

Smartnav can give alternative routes and can do this before you get stuck in the traffic jam. Obviously they don't mention bus lanes as they are designed for average motorists

It's only a matter of time before satnav's do all the above and more.

You're forgetting the human element in providing a service such as taxis. It's kind of the same as going out for a meal. We could all just put money in machines and out pops the dinner but it's not quite the same as being provided with a friendly personable service. That will not be replaced by computers :D

Give it time...someone will challenge it under the Human Rights Bill as being Discriminatory against the cerebrally challenged thus denying them thier rights as human beings to drive cabs through the streets of London..

I agree that satnav's are a god send when working out with your licensed area but these journey's are quoted and paid up front before you start off on your journey, so any route you take will do because the passenger has agreed the price before you set off.

The Dundee taxi trade have again seen a change in the taxi badge test. The test has been amended. It now comprises 100 questions with an overall passmark of 85%.The previous pass mark was 88% from 135 questions .Stuart Galloway from Dundee city council has said "When we introduced the new test we said we would review it. The police indicated that it was too long for applicants to complete in the time allowed".The old test had only been in operation for a couple of months.

This is another clear indication of the councils policy in helping 203020 .
