Well just thought I'd update everybody as I haven't been on for a few days.

Well I am still desperate to be a taxi driver but I have finally gotten a hold of my taxi driver friend...through fate!

Basically I was out in my front garden having a cigarette when 2 taxis pulled up on to the street 1 of which was being towed by the other, well my friend jumped out the car and explained that his clutch had gone so I said he could pop his car on my drive until he got it fixed, well I spoke to him about becoming a taxi driver and he is coming for the car sometime today and he's coming back on Monday with the forms to get me through it!

He's said that once I've got my taxi license etc he'll let me use his car and just half towards the insurance and pay for the fuel I use!

So hopefully I shall be a taxi driver very very very soon :D

upper parliament street, the broadmarsh shopping centre, the victoria shopping centre and trent bridge will be your regular drops then, pop into Anchor supplies (by the cattle market) for some surplus kit, drive like a german tank commander...

and the smell of the pork pie factory as you drive alongside the trent into town, not to be missed

I passed my test just over a year ago now on the 5th of feb last year,

If you,ve been driving for just one year your going to have one helluva taxi/ph Insurance premium....and Im sure some Councils stipulate a certain amount of driving experience regardless of your age before you can apply for a Licence....check it out before you buy a motor....

That'll give you chance to try it first see if you still like it after a year, save rushing in and buying your motor :D

Nottingham City Council don't have any stipulations regarding driving experience as long as you've held your license for a year and can demonstrate how to drive safely.

As for buying as I already said I'm going to need a car soon anyway as I don't have a car at the minute...so even if I do lease one I'm going to have to buy a car for my own personal transport.

Don't do it!!
No holiday/sick pay, no pension. To earn decent money you have to work nights/weekends.
You can be the greatest 'people person' in the world, the punters will still drive you mad!

Stop it. It's not that bad. You don't need holiday/sick pay or a pension. You'll never have holidays or be sick and why have a pension when you're never going to retire cos you'll probably die on the job. If the punters do happen to annoy you just fold them neatly and pop them in the boot :D

Try before you buy, driving a taxi isn't everyone's cup of tea its one of these jobs you will either love it or hate it, but once you've went to the expense of your own car your stuck in the job as long as you have the car payment to keep up. Regards what type of vehicle I would definitely recommend a new style Skoda Superb, it really is the business.

Also check out your costing for insuring your new venture as some policy's can be a bit pricey when you have no no-claims bonusess.

I'm not going to be buying a taxi, this is what I'm trying to say the car that I will be buying will be just a cheap little runaround for me...not for taxi driving, I'm going to be hiring a taxi off of my friend if and when I get a license to do that.

Then a few months down the line when I get the compensation for an accident if I like the job then I will be buying a cab outright...as for the Superb, or even Skoda's in general...I will not be touching one with a barge pole as the insurance on them is astronomical!!!

I had a look first of all at a VW Passat 2.0 Diesel for insurance £1,857...The Octavia with the same engine from the same insurers with exactly the same extras in with it (breakdown, key cover etc) £2,817!!!

£960 difference for a different car but with the same engine.

Your driving experience may not be an issue for Nottingham but, it could make a difference to insurance, including another person's taxi you may drive initially.

Google 'taxi insurance' and get some online figures by completing the forms online through to quotation stage. Use two vehicles: A Skoda Superb (regardless of your feelings, it's only an exercise at this stage!!) and a Peugeot E7.

You should get a gross premium of about £2500-3000[??]. If you are wildly above this, come back and discuss it before you commit yourself to spending money on your licence.

It is a good business to be in, but you need to go in with your eyes open and do your research.

nope, done plenty of multidrop round the area in vans and 7.5tonners though, that really learns you routes and short cuts...

Truck parts first, and catering supplies after, upto 35 drops a day over a 250 mile route on tacho....

try the rear entrance to M&S (Notts) before the bollards go up, with 7 rollcages to get off....and try finding the goods in for M&S mansfield

(there isnt one)....

And you get no redundacy if your self employed either if things go belly up....and without seeming to Pessimistic nows about as bad a time as could be to start In the HC/PH business...more and more people in your position are doing exactly the same and trying their hand at driving, its hard enough for established drivers but it would be a damn sight harder for a newbie. That said..if you can make it in hard times you'll thrive in the good times..

If you are car less, and need to buy a motor, then it would make sense to buy one you can license.

But be careful and don't brake your bank, the roads out there aren't paved with gold.
