I have  As to whether I should I don't know. I have also driven with all my windows open and turning my head towards the outside to take my breath. It is one of the reason I work weekend nights cos you don't really get that kind of customer then :D

Ugh! Glad I don't work down there. I've had 5 sickies in 8 years and only one that messed my car. I've never had anybody sh!t in it I'd be mortified if they did :D

In London you always direct them to the head of the rank.

The only exceptions being some split ranks with feeds that are quite a distance from the main pick up point such as Canary Wharf, Victoria etc.

Sometimes people walk down looking for a Taxi that will accept a credit card (I'm here!) but that's about it.
Sometimes in the summer, the odd regular user loiters if they see a Gold Model near the front as they know it will have Air Con.

quote="stationtone"]I also think that it is not always the case that the first car gets the job.In Dundee their are a lot of different types of taxis so first car may not be suitable for the job ie wheelchair, 5,6,7, seat-er taxis.

If there is only a 4 seat saloon at the front, and 5 6 or 8 turn up by all means direct them to the first suitable cab if there is one on the rank.
As all taxis in there own areas are all the same price allegedly, and there are only 1 to 4 punters they should endeavor to use the first one there.
What happens here is they tend to go to the one at the back when they come out of the clubs and the feeder rank fills the gap so the ones at the front are left sitting there they even get the ones off the unoficial feeder rank as well
I know that its the punters choice as its in the book, but how easy would it be to introduce it, and give everyone who has to put up with this on a daily basis a fair chance of earning a crust

I'm sure it's a piece of pi$$ to introduce it. The problems would begin in enforcement and educating the public out of their right to choose :D

Simple signage at the front of the rank and further signs down the rank informing the public would be a start, the only signs we have apart from taxis only painted on the road is no parking except taxis on lampposts
there is also the local radio station and the local rags

Conditions state that drivers should not accept a fare if they are not at the head of the Hackney Carriage stand.

I think we all understand that the law sometimes plays second fiddle when it conflicts with the whims of councillors and licensing officers. The statutory provision set out in section 53 of the TPCA 1847 makes it an offence to refuse to drive without reasonable cause. There is no provision in the 1847 act that allows a licensing authority to impose a condition on a driver requiring them to refuse a hire.

Whatever next?

In our town there are no official ranks outside the 2 night clubs so it is a free for all. Drivers usually "rank" up outside one of the clubs but as the kebab shop and curry shop are further down the road people comming from that end usually take the first taxi from the back of the rank. You can be sitting at the front and not get a fare whilst everyone else is as busy as hell.

There is nothing wrong with the sentiment the problem lies in the illegality of the condition.

We can only work to the law but here we have yet another case of a council making up their lown laws.

Yes JD councils just do what they want .This is a common complaint all over the country. Also they interpretate the act in a way that suits them.
