Depending on whether you opt for Hackney carriage or Private hire you will have fixed costs; Medicals, CRB checks, possibly NVQ/B-Tec qualification requrements & a local knowledge test and of course the licence fee to pay for before you opt for just being a driver or becoming an owner driver.
If your council stipulate a purpose built or purpose converted vehicle for Hackney carriage work and if there is also a vehicle age restriction then your running cost will be considerably higher than those for a saloon or estate car, Hackney or PHV!.
However if you still want to give it a go good luck
P.S.stock up on ani-depressents you will need them!

What he said.

Oh and get a solicitor as well, you'll need one when the wife decides she's had enough of you moaning about just about everything, because the job shows you everything.

Ffs sake the poor chap hasn't even started and you're trying to depress him. It's a good job, it's flexible, it can be very rewarding, it can be hard work and yes you get to see a side of people you wouldn't normally see. If you can make a living now you should be ok in the future when things pick up.

Call me suspicious but I would think the only reason you're wife would get pi$$ed off is if you are working all the hours god sends and forget to switch off when you come home or you're playing away which is kinda easy as a taxi driver but goes on in any profession

It would depend who you are switching off too.

You mean people celebrate divorces as well as marriages :?

3 ways to run a car:

1) Ownership: Your car, your insurance, your maintenance.

2)'lease' or 'rent' or any other term you may hear: You pay a set amount each day/week for the use of the car. You, probably, put the fuel in. Someone else (the owner??) pays for maintenance, insurance.

3)Commissioned driver: You drive the car and take a percentage of the take, 40% here, varies substantially throughout the country. No other commitment, walk away at the end of the shift.

top advice from cabbyman there mate
Im putting together a blog on becoming a taxi driver at the mo, the link is in my signature below or Click Here.. its a work in progress but i hope you can get some use out of it. Theres some money off vouchers for the taxi mart store too
