Police force defends hire car usage

Cumbria Police has defended its use of taxis and hire cars for staff when it has a fleet of 316 vehicles.

The force spent more than £200,000 on taxis and hire cars, but said it uses hire vehicles only when they are the cheapest option.

The force said it never uses taxis to transport prisoners home after being released.
