This is what is proposed by Cardiff L.A.

Their view is that a legal challenge could be successful, so why not the others?

Not sure.....but if your going down the training route I suggest you write to the council and point out that the NVQ scheme can have a BTEC thrown in and probably wont cost the driver anything.

Also point out the training providers have a vested interest here.

When 2 0r 3 years ago we were originally threatened by the council do it or else a TGWU rep came down to help .Outcome very little help he told us we must do it and that was before it was a condition of licence

Did the T&G bloke tell you the T&G are running these courses and actively promoting the training?

That's the current situation anyway.....can't say if it was or not at the time you were spoken to though.

A good number of union men are now NVQ assessors.

I'm not sure if it's European money....I was under the impression the scheme was funded through the learning and skills council.

If it's all commonsense could somebody please explain

a) why not all drivers are using the commonsense
b) why some very experienced drivers are failing the btec

Many failed down here because they could not read or write English
properly God only knows how they passed the Knowledge in the first place

Then that is in my opinion totally wrong......makes the course seem worthless.

There should be the provision to bring their literacy and numeracy skills up to date. These courses don't cost anything either. Taxi drivers should be taking advantage of what's available for them.

I have to ask anybody with an ounce of commonsense why they would be with a training provider who says things like "you cannot fail its just an idiots course". Make sure the provider is providing and not just taking. If the council said you had an idiots job you'd soon see your ar$e

Oh well at least I got something for my taxes. I got to keep my badge so I can continue to earn a living to be ripped off as is the case with all taxes.

Just be glad they don't enforce a more serious qualification. Heaven forbid that they should try and make professionals out of the taxi trade. Other professionals spend a lot longer in classrooms and it costs them considerably more to do so. The long term benefits of making the taxi trade a proper and professional trade far out weighs the current 'what about me' attitude of some drivers.

My doctor has been in his trade for more than 20 years. He's very good and I trust him with my life. Not so sure I would if he didn't keep up to date with advances. Not so sure I'd trust his surgery either if it didn't look like it does. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near his staff if they weren't properly trained and polite and clean etc. Same goes for my stylist and my beautician or my car mechanic or my solicitor. In fact I don't want to deal with people who don't know what they are doing and can't prove it, but, sometimes in life we have to.

I've been in taxis that I couldn't get out of quick enough and if that is my opinion what is the opinion of the general public. I spoke with somebody the other week who said nobody chooses to become a taxi driver, I surprised him because I did choose to become a taxi driver, I have other skills and other work experience I could use in another vocation. Maybe he has a point maybe people don't choose. My point is that it has the ability to be a proper professional trade and taxi drivers should be trying to attain that level and as I keep saying get the respect they deserve and keep the rif raf out.
