DfT Press Release 01/04/09
Consultation on improving access to taxis
Earlier this year The Department for Transport published a consultation specifically about improving access by disabled people to taxis
www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/consulttaxis . The Department has been encouraged by the number of replies received so far, and look forward to receiving more.
Following comments received so far by consultees, and via workshops at our two road-shows at Bristol and Edinburgh, the Minister has authorised a late amendment to the consultation. N.B. The consultation closing date is still 24th April 2009.
It was felt that a third way could be considered, and, subject to EU Whole Type Approval, an option allowing Pedicab type bikes and Tuk Tuk type vehicles to be licensed as taxis could help mitigate the costs of running a Wheelchair Accessible taxi. The Department has taken an early non binding view that drivers may wish to run either a WAV type taxi, or a Tuk Tuk/Pedicab type taxi. Saloon vehicles will remain the preferred vehicle for the licensed Private Hire (Minicab) trade.
The Minister announced this proposal at a recent meeting with members of the ‘Meeting of Minds’ Taxi group, and was pleased with the positive responses received from those esteemed members.
Please respond to this particular proposal to;
