A taxi doesn't drive itself. Jockys will do the same work but only driving their own single shifted vehicle. The only one to lose out will be the guy running the double shifted vehicle on the back of of the driver charging the big rental. Until there is an increase in drivers there will be very little change in supply of service to the customer. This is all about owners depending on a drivers to prop up their little illusion of "businessman".

The only thing that changes is the "business" model of how to run a taxi.

I know one driver who's looking to buy in simply because he can't afford to pay £50, a shift. He's looking to put on a street car so that he can work his own hours, especially a Friday and Saturday night. This guy getting desperate because he has a wife and a young family to support. He told me "I know I'm only buying a job but I've got to do something".

I know another guy that who's just lost his Friday night shift because the owner says he "can no longer make ends meet". He's now paying £50, a shift, Sun - Thurs and now he can't make ends meet.

A lot of owners that are now selling up simply need the money to pay off the debt they've built up over the years, and more are working the weekend nights to keep their heads above water.

Oh but where does this leave the driver?

Chipper, you're right, there is a dramatic drop in work but drivers rentals aren't coming down unless the the owners are taking back the big weekend shifts. The driver goes under but the owner gets to survive a little bit longer....

All of the above means not a jot to you chip, now does it?

pay whatever you want chip but i tell you if its more than £50 a week its a rip off.
try working it out.
add the costs up it isnt difficult.
and it was a 1999 metro so no rust. and very well maintained.
you do know we have quality controls in edinburgh dont you.
all taxi's are of the same standard,(except of course brand new ones wich seem to be of a lower standard)
only the drones of the trade think that you have to buy new and it costs 40k for this and 30k for that.
erseholes the lot of them, youre supposed to try and keep costs under control in a business arent you :?: :?: :?:

btw i made the same money in that rustbucket and it only cost me £50 a week, that included insurance ,tax ,tyres and maintenance.
who's the mug chip me or you. :?: :?:

a few years ago chip most edinburgh taxi's were nearly all new vehicles.
the taxi's are now getting older and not being replaced and in some cases being "downgraded" for older more reliable taxi's.
you say thiers also a drop in business ?
good business practice to reduce costs

funny how the rentals never come down though.

less definitly costs more in the edinburgh taxi trade.

By "the holders situation" I take it you mean the driver that can now put on his own single shifted vehicle which can also double as his private car?

You can run a new E7 for less than £200 a week, on the street, all in, financed over 4-5 years. (Oh and btw, Jim put the financial breakdown on fasties. Bob Dewar did a similar breakdown which came up with much the same costs) Of course station permits and a radio position all adds to the costs but you must remember that this is a new vehicle which doubles as your Private Car.

You could of course buy a much cheaper vehicle and reduce your costs even further while working the busy nights for yourself. David Downie, an “owner” who works the Haymarket rank has spent less than 30K in capital out lay in over 20 years, service driving taxis. His latest cab is a 5K TTT metro. There are others.

More plates doesn't mean an increase in service to the customer. You need more drivers to do that. Some but not all, double shifted vehicles would simply become single shifted. A lot of guys on fair rentals would keep working for their current owners.

It's just the same guys doing the same job controlling their own costs while working around their family commitments.

The only one to lose out is the greedy bas*ard with the high overheads, charging the big rental, massaging their big illusion of “businessman”.

I don't know why you waste your breath, they are not interested, its about them, and them alone, they couldn't give a f*ck about the public.

You should have noticed how Jim was revelling in the poor girl being raped....it wasn't a HC driver.....it may not have bee even a PH driver......yet he still persists that the council policy caused the rape.

How many rapes happen in London? Or Birmingham? or any deregulated areas....he hasn't a clue and hasn't done any research. Yet this sad f*cking story fits.

ffs
